We are seeking two experienced and results-driven Body Structures Managers to lead a portion of our Structures Engineering Design team at Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. The team is rapidly growing to meet the increase in development of new Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles. As the Structures Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the development of various vehicle programs and projects, ensuring timely delivery, and driving continuous improvement. Summary

The Manager for Body Structures Engineering Design is responsible for leading a diverse and growing team of engineers responsible for the development of upcoming Hyundai, KIA and Genesis vehicles and technologies related to Body-in-White Upperbody or Underbody sheet metal and other structural components such as bumpers, FEM, reinforcements, etc.

The successful candidate will have a wide breadth of automotive experience with the ability to lead the design and development of numerous vehicles that meet or exceed our requirements from concept development through life-cycle production while simultaneously developing new technologies and adhering to the highest performance standards. Additionally, proven experience with manpower estimating for short, mid, and long term planning plus managing your team's R&D budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Business Management:
    • Successfully meet your team's KPI's including: Program Timing, Cost & Quality Improvement, Intellectual Property, Budget, Personnel Development, Corporate Culture, etc.
    • Develop goals and objectives for all direct reports. Assign tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan, ensuring all goals are met.
    • Team Management:
    • Manage and direct Body Structure Engineers in daily activities for work projects relating to team activities in support of our three brands: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
    • Ensure deliverables are met for your team's responsible components. Develop goals and objectives for all direct reports. Assign tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan.
  • Vehicle Development:
    • Be a subject matter expert in relation to Automotive Body Structure.
    • Ensure Vehicle Development process is followed from concept to post production, satisfying all customer requirements along the way.
    • Conducting competitive benchmarking, detailed engineering cost/weight analysis, performing drawing release, executing engineering orders, meeting durability, NVH, safety and regulatory targets, etc.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Management:
    • Advocate for the internal and external customers.
    • Collaborate with regional affiliates: Sales & Marketing, Manufacturing, Design, Quality, as well as corporate headquarters in Korea.
    • Actively engaging with all levels from Engineers to Manager, to executives, building effective relationships with all.
    • Interface and co-work with other teams within VE, HATCI and its affiliates - Project Management, Product Planning, Materials Development, Safety Integration, Regulation & Certification, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing - provide support as required with testing, development, vehicle clinics, etc.
    • Create and present to Director, VP & President, reoccurring group updates summarizing the key activities and future plans. Review progress to work plan and quality of work. Provide technical direction and guidance. Accurately maintain and update project status reports and review with upper management routinely.
  • Technology Assessment and Development:
    • Support development of technical road maps and strategies with the goal of implementation to the production vehicle.
    • Provide vision and guidance to new technology research and projects.
  • Budgeting and Resource Allocation:
    • Support development of Structures Engineering Design's R&D budget.
    • Monitor and approve expenses, identify savings opportunities, and make project/strategic investment decisions to support all R&D activities
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Manage, train, evaluate, discipline and make recommendations for hire, pay changes, promotions or terminations.
  • Assign or distribute work to direct reports.
  • Instruct and/or train in methods or procedures.
  • Respond to complaints or grievances.
  • Write and execute performance and competency evaluations.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor in Engineering (minimum) with MBA or Master's Degree Preferred
  • 10+ years in automotive vehicle body design and development with increasing levels of project and team management
  • 2+ years mentoring/leading/managing other engineers
  • Expert in Vehicle Design and Solving Development and Quality Issues (Warranty, IQS, Plant Issues, Field Issues)
  • Significant experience and expertise in automotive areas of Body-in-White Structure
  • Experience working and accepting culturally diverse team environment and willingness to learn new ways of interacting
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record

Required Skills

  • Expert oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in CATIA or similar CAD systems
  • Expert Project Management skills
  • Flexible in program and process changes. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs.
  • Expert skills in MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Proficient time management and organization skills
  • Proficient self-management skills

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Main: Office Environment - no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands.

Secondary: Shop Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes; pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and work safely with hand power tools. May work in outdoors or indoors in extremes of weather and temperature. Safety glasses required.
