Media Engineering

Media Engineering is an innovative organization that is focused on providing the best possible video playback experience, art, and metadata to customers around the world, powered by exceptional technology. This strategic work requires streamlining and repurposing technology across different business and distribution channels – including streaming, linear, and theatrical – so that technology can ebb and flow across the needs of the business.

The Targeting Innovation team is looking for a leader and people manager who will drive our team forward in implementing technology to deliver media streams in the most cost effective, secure, and high-quality way. We build amazing user experiences and performant, scalable APIs for Disney+, Hulu, Star+ and ESPN+. Responsibilities will include design and discovery of new projects, executional success, domain ownership, operational expertise, and career and people coaching. From a technology perspective, this role requires strong Functional Programming, Scala, and AWS experience, and a standard of excellence in high availability, high throughput systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team of engineers building software in a collaborative development process

  • Become a domain authority and help the team understand product requirements, prioritization, and project sequencing.

  • Build high-performance, stable, scalable systems to be deployed in an enterprise setting

  • Lead high-level architecture discussions and planning sessions

  • Author and share feedback on technical proposals and root cause analyses

  • Provide mentoring and advice for other engineers

  • Establish engineering standards within the team to drive quality and excellence

  • Contribute to the DSS technical community through presentations, tech talks, and other knowledge-sharing efforts

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of technical experience with at least 2 years of technical and engineering leadership experience

  • Experience delivering backend applications in a production environment

  • Awareness of functional programming and Scala (Cats, Cats Effect, Tagless Final)

  • Experience building RESTful services (APIs in Scala)

  • Understanding of async programming models (events, callbacks, promises, async/await) and threading/concurrency

  • Understanding of source control concepts and exposure to Git

  • Experience with build and deployment technologies such as Jenkins and Docker

  • Experience with application monitoring software such as Grafana, Datadog, etc

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Self-learner, independent, excellent problem-solving skills

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field), or equivalent training or work experience

The hiring range for this position in Seattle, WA and in New York City, NY is $172,282 to $231,110 per year; the hiring range for this position in Santa Monica/Burbank/Glendale/L.A., California and in Bristol, Connecticut is $164,492 to $220,660; and the hiring range for this position in San Francisco, California is $180,154 to $241,670 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
