Position Summary
Works independently to manage the evaluation of the Administrative, Jail and Law Enforcement divisions of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the division’s operations and their consistency with operating procedures, laws or statutes (county, state or federal), court orders, duty post assignments, classifications, and administrative practices.
Pay Grade: 55
Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
Minimum Qualifications
1. Five (5) years’ experience in internal auditing which two (2) years must be in a supervisory or managerial capacity; AND
2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in auditing, finance, public or business administration, or a closely related field; OR
3. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
4. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Supervises the work of the auditors reviewing and auditing the established systems to ensure compliance with policies, plans, procedures, laws, and regulations.
2. Reviews and approves the purpose, scope, and auditing approach of each project for assigned areas of audit cognizance.
3. Develops and executes comprehensive audit program for the evaluation of management controls within the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
4. Provides executive and operational management with reports on audit coverage and results of the audit activity and interprets those results.
5. Maintains records and prepares reports on the administration of audit projects and other assigned activities.
6. Identifies factors causing deficient conditions within the Sheriff’s Office and recommends courses of action to improve the conditions, including special surveys.
7. Performs management responsibilities in accordance with policies and procedures, training, appraising performance, discipline, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
8. Recommends program goals and develops plans for the section with upper management.
9. Develops timetables to ensure all program activities and objectives stay on schedule.
10. Coordinates activities with other section managers in order to meet Division goals and objectives.
11. Supervises and monitors the activities of assigned staff and helps direct and provide for their specialized training.
12. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

2. Practical knowledge and skill in interpreting, explaining, developing and applying procedures.

4. Thorough knowledge and skill to analyze facts, identify problems, make conclusions, and recommend or take appropriate action.
5. Thorough knowledge of organization, financial (including budgeting, accounting, and auditing), purchasing and personnel management techniques.
6. Ability to communicate orally and through written words. Strong writing skills are required along with the ability to work amiably and professionally with all.
7. Knowledge of administrative and organizational skills.
