Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' merchant-and network-related businesses to enable a sharp focus on using the power of our network to provide unique value to all of our mutual customers. The organization manages the relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express and runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally. The mission of the GMNS Operational Excellence team is to support GMNS through continuous identification, assessment and management of risk to enable growth, minimize business disruption and avoid financial loss. GMNS Operational Excellence achieves this through providing risk expertise and insights to support risk-based decisioning, and by driving a consistent, repeatable, and integrated approach to support strong risk management. To that end, the team is responsible for the oversight and governance of control and compliance programs and initiatives within the business unit. This includes leading global, regional and local activities and also includes execution against all components of the American Express Operational Risk framework.

Job Responsibilities

The Manager, GMNS Operational Excellence will be responsible for leading and supporting projects focused on identifying, managing and mitigating regulatory, compliance, and operational risk for the business unit. The role will focus on project management, including the implementation of streamlined cross-functional operational processes, and the creation and/or enhancement of ongoing governance and oversight. This role requires the ability to support global initiatives and lead and participate in projects across multiple regions and time zones. Responsibilities will include:

  • Partner with colleagues across Operational Excellence, GMNS and control & compliance teams to identify thematic areas of risk and define and deliver risk mitigation solutions.
  • Plan, monitor and drive project progress against timelines, milestones and deliverables.
  • Ensure timely completion of relevant control and compliance driven deliverables to support with maintenance of a robust control environment.
  • Provide guidance, program governance and reporting for key stakeholders.
  • Support audit, corrective action, and operational risk event remediation efforts.
  • Coordinate and drive alignment of cross-functional partners.

Qualifications/Skills & Experience

  • Self-starter with strong project management experience driving complex, large-scale, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Must be able to manage multiple deliverables, meet strict deadlines and work well with different areas of the organization.
  • Problem solver and agile decision-maker with solid analytical skills.
  • Strong team player with ability to influence opinions without having direct authority.
  • Ability to develop relationships with leaders, peers, and control and compliance teams. Existing network and relationships with Audit, Operational Risk Governance Group, Compliance, and/or Global Services teams preferred.
  • Previous exposure to regulatory and policy compliance activities with a strong control mindset.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills allowing for clear and appropriate messaging for multiple levels/audiences.
  • Understanding of the merchant business, related regulatory landscape, and emerging trends/models is preferred.
  • 2 plus years of related experience required.
  • Project management certification preferred.
  • Ability to travel (<10%).

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
