JOB SUMMARY: This management position is primarily responsible for the overall cleanliness of the public and private areas in the passenger terminal complex and other buildings as directed. This position will be responsible for supervising all janitorial personnel, establishing and maintain cleaning schedules to maintain an effective cleaning standard. This job description lists only the primary duties normally assigned to this position but does not restrict the performance of other duties assigned by the Supervisor or upper management.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- This position is responsible for developing a program to support the cleanliness of various spaces assigned including the Airport Authority offices, conference areas, and all public areas of the Departures and Arrival Terminals, concourses and other buildings as directed.
- Responsible for supervising, training, and coordinating the work activities on a 24-hours basis of all janitorial crews with the assistance of the shift supervisors.
- Maintain high quality standards throughout the facilities, and within the janitorial department.
- Perform routine inspections of all work areas.
- Make routine inventory of supplies as required and order all necessary cleaning and sanitary supplies to ensure a smooth operation. This includes inventorying, requisitioning, and participating in the budget process.
- Responsible for developing a program to properly maintain all cleaning equipment and track the amount of money that is being spent on a specific piece of equipment to determine whether replacement is needed.
- Responsible for various additional duties including the arranging of furniture in conference rooms when necessary.
- Responsible for ordering janitorial supplies and equipment in accordance with NAA procurement policies.
- Ensure that all proper safety standards and equipment are maintained, including the placing of special signs in areas of potential danger.
- Assist in preparing the department’s annual budget reports.
- Ensure department payroll is prepared correctly and in a timely manner.
- Prepare employee evaluations, and work with employees to identify future goals.
- Create, coordinate, oversee and inspect all service contracts.
- Adhere to all Authority personnel policies and department guidelines.
- Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The following generally describes the knowledge, skills and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.
- Be familiar with cleaning equipment and supplies and know the proper application of same.
- Be familiar with the physical arrangements of the terminal facilities and exercise good judgment in meeting maintenance commitment.
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuum, buffers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet shampooers, and extractors. Required to drive Authority vehicles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Management, or a related field is preferred, but not required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Five years of proven experience in managing a large cleaning operation.
- Four years housekeeping experience including knowledge of general housekeeping methods and equipment and principles of preventive housekeeping.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possess a valid driver’s license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, bend, stoop, squat, stand and walk constantly. The employee is required to assist in lifting conference tables and chairs, pushing and pulling table carts, unloading cleaning supplies from truck and lifting trash barrels. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 35 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to use small ladders and climb stairs. Employees must demonstrate the ability to perform these essential functions during their physical examinations.
WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Office space provided. Work inside ventilated and lighted areas. Must be able to report to work even during inclement weather conditions.
DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS: All drivers must be at least 21 years of age, licensed for at least 3 years, have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.
- License is active and NOT suspended.
- Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
- An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver’s license as long as they reside in that state.
- An “unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:
- Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle
- DWI/DUI
- Drug Offense
- Eluding a Police Officer
- Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us
- Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident
- Lending an Operator’s License or Registration to Another
- Open Container Violation
- Passing a Stopped School Bus
- Racing or Speed Contest Violation
- Reckless Driving
- Speeding 25 mph, or more, above speed limit
- Suspended License History – Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations
- Temporary Operator's Permit
- Two or more at fault accident convictions
- Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide
- Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months
Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.
