The Team/Program/Department
The OHS Donor relations team is responsible for solicitating major gifts from individuals and foundations. As a member of this high performing team, the Donor Relations Manager is an outward facing fundraiser responsible for deepening donor engagement and increasing support for OHS priorities through face-to-face solicitation. While this team collaborates closely with each other, the development team, the CEO, and other key stakeholders across the organization, Donor Relations Managers should be entrepreneurial in nature and driven to meet and exceed goals.
The Position
The Donor Relations Manager is a member of the major gifts team and is responsible for soliciting annual fund gifts, restricted gifts, and capital gifts that will increase participation and financial support to OHS. The primary role of the Donor Relations Manager is to help donors deepen their relationships with OHS in support of this expanded work and will be responsible for moving a portfolio of 150-160 donors and prospects through the moves management cycle using relationship-driven strategies and face-to-face visits.

INFLUENCE & REPRESENTATION
  • Represent OHS, as requested, at key stakeholder and sectorial meetings or engagements.
  • Communicate effectively to executive, and other stakeholder groups to ensure they are informed and able to actively engage
  • Liaise with and maintain productive relationships with all stakeholders, including other departments, and donors; build mutually rewarding professional relationships inside OHS at all levels.
  • Leverage our best practices externally and grow OHS' reputation as a leader in this space by identifying opportunities to share the process and results in the broader animal welfare sector through presentations, whitepapers, blogs, etc.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Solicits and secures gifts of $5,000 and above for OHS priorities including capital projects, annual operations and directed giving.
  • Uses moves management to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors to successfully develop and implement comprehensive strategies for 150+ individual prospects.
  • Increases the number of major donors and the dollars raised from major donors through qualify new and existing donors and strengthening engagement through a series of documented visits and strategic communication.
  • Works in conjunction with the VP, Development to establish performance goals; monitors progress against goals and devises strategies to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Works collaboratively with other OHS team members throughout the organization to be metrics driven, to meet or exceed team and personal financial goals, and engage in a high level of prospect contact.
  • Articulates and implements strategies for communicating with donors; drafts and customizes correspondence, proposals and other written materials for assigned prospects.
  • Communicates and advocates the needs and impact of OHS to prospective and existing donors.
  • Develops collegial and productive relationships with colleagues in Development and across the organization.
  • Works independently to meet performance goals and stays on task within the context of the big picture goal.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • 2 years previous professional fundraising experience, including demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitations.
  • Demonstrated experience strategizing, formulating and closing major gifts, and in reaching annual fundraising and performance goals and targets.
  • Experience in making successful qualification calls, experience with moves management and managing a portfolio, as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors to develop and deepen relationships between them and OHS.
  • Demonstrated ability to present the strategic direction and the importance of the institution to the community.
  • Ability to work with Board of Directors, OHS senior staff, and other high-level volunteers.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including ability to work with donors in emotionally sensitive gift situations.
  • The ability to authentically represent the mission, vision and values of OHS and a passion for animals.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to maintain a valid Driver's License and provide proof of auto insurance.
  • Capital Campaign experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Portland philanthropic community preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills to effectively communicate with technical, internal, and external audiences, leveraging a variety of communication channels.

SUCCESS FACTORS
Success in this role will be directly linked to the Donor Relation Manger's ability to listen closely to what donors want to accomplish with their philanthropy. In addition, the person in this role will need to encompass professional resilience and be committed to pleasant persistence as they qualify new prospects and deepen engagement with long-time donors. Successful Donor Relations Managers are empathetic, detail-oriented, flexible, patient, and fearless when working with donors. They are metrics oriented and are committed to meeting and exceeding financial and contact goals on an ongoing basis.
Work Environment Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position interacts and collaborates will all levels of the organization, including OHS staff, executive team members, donors, general-public, external vendors, volunteers, and supporters. Contact and communication is carried out through face-to-face, telephone and digital interactions. Excellent customer service skills are essential to success. Communication must be clear, understandable, professional, and respectful in all circumstances.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed at home or in an office and medical center/animal shelter environment.
  • Travel between the two campuses may be required.
  • Working at both campuses may be required.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Animal contact and related injuries may occur.
  • Noise exposure varies and sometimes includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.
  • Pace of work is active and demanding, requiring a high degree of multitasking and ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing concurrent projects/tasks to completion.
  • Contact with angry or emotional people may occur.

Physical Requirements
  • Occasional moving of items up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional moving items above shoulder level.
  • Occasional use of hands and arms at or above shoulder level.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting and/or stooping may occur.
