Job description

Under supervision, to perform work involving providing support and assistance to the Mammography staff and Manager in the performance of their duties, specifically with training, Quality Improvement, and continuing education issues. Works closely with the Sub-section Chief (Radiologist) and directly with the Manager of Mammography dept. to ensure the efficient daily operation of the dept. Technologist interacts with co-workers, Physicians, patients and nursing units, displaying appropriate Guest Relations.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  1. Assesses the exams performed on an ongoing basis, and provides findings and results as appropriate.
  2. Assists Leadership in collecting departmental CQI, Radiologist CQI, and ACR in the
  3. appropriate time frame.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to work independently, to operate all types of departmental equipment, and perform all types of Breast procedures, taking into account patient’s age, physical mental and emotional condition, 100% of the time.
  5. Informs Leadership of all equipment malfunction and initiates appropriate service calls and maintains documentation of same.
  6. Learns office procedures so that direction and assistance can be given to technical and office staff in the absence of the manager.
  7. Assists with orientation and training of technologists on the proper use of all equipment and new procedures instituted in the department.
  8. Guides and directs employees as needed to ensure that services to patients and other customers are maintained at an optimal level at all times, while conferring with the radiologist or physician requests for supplies required for special procedures.
  9. Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned.
  10. Assists physicians with biopsies and other invasive procedures, utilizing the modality as guidance and maintaining sterile technique.
  11. Review and correlates patient exam orders with patients current history and prior exam history to ensure that the appropriate exam is being performed.
  12. Verifies correct transfer of images and exam information through PACS and RIS for interpretation by the Radiologist ensuring correct charging.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS (Minimum Requirements)

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Well experienced with Mammography & Bone Density procedures.
  • Experience with 3D Mammography is preferred.
  • Breast Biopsy experience is strongly recommended.
  • Sufficient experience is required to have demonstrated clinical competency in the field of Mammography & Bone Density
  • Must have proven leadership skills.
  • High degree of independent action and exercise of judgment is a must, along with a creative ability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interactive and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with doctors, nurses, technologists and support staff.
  • Ability to work professionally under pressure and in a stressful environment.
  • Must act independently without specific instructions in a self-confident manner
  • Must be able to work under required deadlines and schedules while being flexible to handle special requests and projects.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be professional, courtesy and must have a positive attitude.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and department meetings
  • Knowledgeable of and follows operational policies and procedures related to patient care and patient safety.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency in patient care.
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy of all data, records, forms, reports and any other HIPPA information.
  • Implements safety precautions which are detailed in the policies.
  • Successfully completes the annual safety review
  • Assist with ACR accreditations
  • Ability to travel to different facilities owned by Hospital.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving the operation of mammographic radiographic equipment and other equipment/devices as appropriate.
  • Position patients, using immobilization when necessary. Calculate exposure factors, assist physicians.
  • Perform the quality control functions related to mammography.
  • Evaluate radiographs for diagnostic quality obtaining additional images as needed.
  • Prepare and set up medical supplies using aseptic techniques if appropriate. Explain procedures to patients.
  • Charge mammographic procedures and supplies in EPIC.
  • Provide orientation to new Mammographers.
  • Provide education and training to student Mammographers.
  • Assist in maintenance and compilation of statistical data.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing all breast imaging procedures, to include breast interventional procedures.
  • Monitor mammography section procedures and supply charges to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work therein.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree Radiologic Sciences required.
  • Bachelor Degree Radiologic Sciences preferred.
  • Graduate of a 24-month AMA approved School of Radiologic Technology required.
  • Technologists initially qualifying on or after April 28, 1999, must meet the Mammo-Specific requirements by having at least 40 hours of documented training in mammography required.
  • ARRT certification in radiology required.
  • ARRT advanced certification in mammography required.
  • FDA/MQSA qualified to include meeting the MQSA CE requirements of at least 15 CEUs in a 36 month period that must include at least 6 CEUs in each mamographic modality used, required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Performance of a minimum of 25 mammography exams under direct supervision of an appropriate MQSA qualified individual. At least 8 hours of training in using any modality (e.g., digital) before beginning to use that modality independently.
  • Must obtain an Advanced Certification in Mammography within 1 year.
