Job description

The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile justice agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We work with young people who are detained or committed and provide detention, custody, diagnosis, education and support to young people ages 7-21. Most of the youth served are between the ages 14 and 18. The Department promotes positive change for the youth committed to our care, and has been on the forefront of de-institutionalization, in part, by providing adolescent-focused rehabilitation to youth in residential treatment. 


The Department of Youth Services employs staff in various professions and backgrounds in order to engage young people in strategies that support positive youth development. As a key member of the residential team, direct-care staff monitor, and provide on-site and immediate intervention of DYS youth in our residential facilities.

We are seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Maintenance Working Foreman to support the Central Region/Zara Cisco Brough Center, located at 288 Lyman Street, Westboro, MA.   

  

The Maintenance Working Foreman Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Manage complex maintenance needs of the facility
  • Determine the need for maintenance or repair of building structures
  • Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and janitorial services within a locked juvenile facility
  • Maintain annual preventive maintenance plan and emergency plans
  • Recommend repairs and acquisition of supplies or the purchase of new equipment  
  • This position reports to the Institutional Maintenance Foreman
  • Work with Institutional Foreman to Prepare, Request, and Review Bids for services
  • Communicate maintenance needs to the Institutional Foreman and Facility Administer
  • Other Duties are Required

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of safety practices, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and procedures followed in building maintenance and repair work
  • Familiarity with types of equipment and materials used in building maintenance, janitorial and repair work
  • Adherence to standard preventive maintenance procedures followed in building maintenance structures
  • Adept at using small engines - lawnmowers, snow blowers, power tools, etc.
  • Ability to operate small hand tools and power tools such as pliers, chisels and drills
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions for assembly/repair
  • Familiarity with Commbuys and CAMIS
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions for assembly/repair
  • Working knowledge/understanding of HVAC system, plumbing, and electrical
  • Rough and Finish carpentry experience

 

Special Requirements:

 

         Minimum Age Requirement: 21 years

         Applicants must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.

         Must be able to perform the physical requirement of the job (i.e. Ability to properly restrain or subdue youth through appropriate use of handcuffs or other restraint techniques) if necessary.

         Able to  talk and/or hear, stand and walk, run, kneel and climb stairs, as well as lift, carry, push, or pull up to 55 pounds with or without assistance and with or without the use of devices and/or equipment to assist in the lifting effort.

         Based on assignment, incumbents may be required to possess a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

         Upon hire, incumbents must complete and maintain a valid certification in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid.

 

Working Conditions:

         Incumbents may be exposed to verbal and/or physical confrontations and potentially dangerous environments.

         Incumbents may be required to physically restrain youth.

         Incumbents typically work a standard work week (five 8-hour shift); however, may be required to work extended hours, nights, holidays or weekends.

         Incumbents may be required to travel in-state and based on assignment may be required to travel out of state.

Schedule:

7:00 am to 3:00 pm

Days off:

Saturday and Sunday

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time, experience in building maintenance, repair and/or construction or in a building construction trade. 
Special Requirements: 
1. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts
 Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required. 
2. Based on assignment, incumbents may be required to possess the appropriate certification or licensure as a pesticide applicator in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Pesticide Board of the Department of Food and Agriculture (Code of Massachusetts Regulations #333 1.00 through 10.00).
