The purpose of this position is to provide entry level training to candidates lacking professional experience in General Services, Streets and Utilities divisions in the public sector. Trainees are provided initial learning opportunities regarding the performance of essential functions associated with work crews in landscaping, construction, maintenance, and repair of town streets, roads, sidewalks, trails, and right of ways, utilities, town's water, sewer, storm drain infrastructure, collection of solid waste and recycling, buildings, parks, and vehicles and equipment. The employee will be introduced to one or more divisions and begin training to acquire the competence to fulfill the job duties and essential functions of their assigned crew.
The trainees are required to attain a basic working knowledge of tools, equipment, and vehicles assigned by their supervisor or the supervisor's designee. The amount of time assigned to any division and duty fluctuates according to the season and needs of the department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Participates as a working team member performing manual labor for one or more divisions to include repairing/replacing asphalt; mowing, trimming and watering grass, trees, and flowers/plants; cleaning and repairing/replacing storm water channels, structures, pipes and culverts; repairing/replacing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; repairing/replacing sewer utility hole structures and water meter vaults; providing maintenance on water and sewer pipes and infrastructure; removing litter, debris and deceased animals from streets/roads, drainage systems, parks, playing fields and Town property; and supporting facility maintenance operations Operates hand and power tools to include plate tampers, shovels, rakes, brooms, saws, mowers, trimmers, sprayers, blowers, vacuum, compactors, trowels, digging bars, mops, and floor buffers Participates in scheduled programs such as on-call, Fall/Spring cleanup, leaf collection and monthly brush collection Responds to emergencies and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition to include pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance, and washing/cleaning equipment, shop, and work areas; reports faulty equipment Assists in work zone set up and flagging operations Performs other duties as assigned Job Responsibilities JOB REQUIREMENTS Education and Experience High School diploma or GED or equivalent education, training, and experience operating general hand and power tools Licenses and Certifications Valid Virginia driver's license with the ability to meet and maintain Town insurability requirements Obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License Learner's Permit Obtain and maintain Work Zone Safety, VA Flagging, Blood Borne Pathogens, and CPR & First Aid certification
