Position Description
Position Title: Maintenance Worker I - Public Works
Department: Public Works
Pay Grade: 8 FLSA: Non-exempt
Reports To: Crew Leader

Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to perform public works maintenance and construction tasks for City streets, parks, structures, property, and buildings. The work is performed under the supervision of the Crew Leader.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Performs maintenance tasks such as cutting grass, plowing snow, chipping brush, grading and maintaining land (i.e. ball diamonds), painting; planting, trimming, or removing trees or shrubs; seeding or fertilizing grass, installing signs, installing playground equipment, winterizing park restrooms, filling potholes, applying pesticides, maintaining restrooms, picking up trash, pouring and finishing concrete, replacing pumps/motors, repairing plumbing leaks, installing computer cables, performing carpentry/building construction tasks, performing electrical/HVAC tasks, welding, siding and soffit repair, replacing/repair roofs, and performing other tasks as assigned and capable.
Construction of pavilions, parking lots, outbuildings, lofts, offices, dugouts, fencing, drainage systems, roadway culverts, leaf boxes, basket walls, bridges, cricket pads, or other structures as needed.
Operates dump trucks, tractors, mowers, common hand tools, chipper, concrete tools, spreaders, plows, motor grader, compressors, jack hammers, bull dozers, bob cats, back hoes, track hoes, aerial cranes, and other equipment as assigned and qualified.
Equipment cleaning and maintenance. May perform field equipment repairs or report malfunctioning equipment to Crew Leader.
May direct temporary employees.
Trains newer or less experienced Maintenance Workers. Hauls materials to job sites.
Demolition of buildings and structures. Creek bank stabilization. Retaining walls.
Storm drains and storm sewers. Stream restoration.
Interprets drawings.
Vehicle equipment preventive maintenance such as checking tire pressure, fluid or fuel levels.
May be called to assist with natural disasters such as flooding, tornados, earthquakes, etc. Works in conjunction with Police, Fire and Parks on traffic control, clean up and repairs, or restoration.
Maintains positive work atmosphere by performing and communicating in a manner which promotes a good relationship with citizens, and other members of the community, co-workers and supervisors.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent, one year construction experience, maintenance, or electrical/HVAC skills or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid Missouri driver’s license required.

Ability to assemble, copy, record and transcribe data and information, following a prescribed plan. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and information.
Ability to advise and provide interpretation to others how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, and general operating and maintenance manuals.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing with Department personnel and the general public.
Mathematical Ability
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to calculate area and volume.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
Ability to use functional reasoning in performing semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action.
Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable criteria.
Physical Requirements
Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as dump trucks, motor grader, backhoe, loaders, stree sweeper, mowers, compressor, jack hammer, lift truck, skid steerer, snow blower, power and hand tools, welder, cutting torch and others for assigned projects and duties. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as assembling.
Ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.
Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, machinery, traffic hazards, wetness and/or dust. This exposure may cause some discomfort and presents a risk of injury.

Pay: $44,100.00 - $55,801.00 per year
