Description
The City of Sioux City is seeking to fill several positions with a Maintenance Worker.
Employees in this position are required to perform duties related to the maintenance and repair of streets, water distribution system, storm/sanitary sewers, and City parks and cemeteries. Employees operate trucks on construction crews, flushers, valve truck, backhoe, jet truck, snowplows and other equipment as required. Employees occasionally work as a semi-skilled or unskilled worker performing laboring tasks. This position is very physical work. Employees must be in good physical condition.
This position may work a variety of shifts depending on which department the position is assigned to. The position may also require employees to work (4) four 10-hour days in the summer; overtime and shift work may be required.
Class A commercial learner's permit must be obtained by start date.
Employees must obtain a Class A CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsements (within 6 months of hire).

Duties
- Participates in the construction, maintenance and installation of bridges, culverts, water mains and sewer connections.
- Build and clean out sewers, manholes and catch basins using rakes, shovels and jet vac truck.
- Repair and replace water mains, hydrants, storm and sewer lines.
- Participate on street crew involving asphalt and concrete work, milling, crack filling and repairing breakdowns.
- Maintain, mow and trim city properties and right-of-ways, operate tractor, weed eater and related equipment.
- Pick up trash, tree limbs and debris in and around buildings and work sites.
- Clean and maintain tools and equipment in proper and safe working order.
- Install and maintain traffic signs, barricades and similar traffic warning devices.
- Inspect, repair and install playground equipment and marina boat ramps and docks.
- Dig and back fill graves.
- Participate in snow removal and landscaping activities.
- Drive and operate trucks, loaders and other small equipment.
- May serve as the lead person on a small crew of other workers.
- May perform various custodial duties.
- Maintains good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to all citizen requests for service.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.
- Regularly lifts and/or up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Qualifications
Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Job Knowledge: Some knowledge of methods, practices, tools and materials used in municipal construction and maintenance work and of the occupational hazards and accepted safety precautions applicable to this work. Skill and ability in the use and safe operation of the tools and equipment used in this type of work.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak effectively with fellow employees and citizens; read in English; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and sit. The employee frequently is required to stand; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Must be able obtain a Class A commercial driver's license with air-brake and tanker endorsement within six months from the date of hire.
Class A commercial learner's permit must be obtained by start date.
Required - Graduation from High School or GED
