Job Summary
Under close supervision, this position involves manual labor in the performance of routine tasks that may be of a physically demanding and heavy nature.
Responsibilities
Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of a variety of equipment and facilities; greases and makes minor repairs on equipment; services and washes automobiles and trucks. Operates light equipment and trucks including saw, air hammer, concrete and mortar mixers, vibrator, rollers, hydraulic powered tools and minor test equipment. Participates in minor maintenance and cleaning of buildings. Assists in maintenance of water, wastewater and resaca maintenance systems or electrical work as required. May assist in minor maintenance and repair of resaca maintenance dewatering equipment and portable pumps. May perform or assist with carpentry work in the construction/repair of walls, ceilings, furniture, etc. Assists in building forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and laying pipes of various sizes. May assist in placing concrete and fiberglass manholes, repairing broken pipes, opening clogged sewers or drains, and checking and cleaning manholes. Paints structures and equipment as required. Assists in digging or backfilling ditches and loading materials on trucks. May assist in loading, unloading and operating work boat. May assist in minor maintenance and repair of dredge equipment. Works shift schedule and call-out duty as needed (including nights, weekends, and holidays). Completes other job duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine painting and carpentry. Some knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanical and electrical equipment. Skill in courteously dealing with the public and employees, in person, writing, on the radio and by telephone. Skill in understanding and following oral and/or written instructions in English. Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions i.e., bending, squatting, stretching, lifting, pulling, pushing, twisting and climbing. Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations through frequent contact with internal and external customers. Ability to learn how to use an electronic work order management system (Cityworks, Azteca) and Microsoft office programs. Ability to work overtime as required.
Education & Experience Requirements
High School Diploma or GED or U.S. Equivalency report required and six (6) months experience in laboring work.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions. Some maintenance areas are treacherous and include rocks, holes, and mud that require difficult climbing and maneuvering over, under and around various obstacles. Employee will have to cut his own trail as needed. Ability to move equipment and material that could weigh up to 90 lbs. with assistance. Ability to work in a 30-foot tank, going up and down by ladder, shoveling settled sludge into a bucket, pulling the filled bucket by rope, carrying it to the receiving area, emptying it, and repeating the process as needed during the shift, up to 40 to 50 times per shift. Bucket weight is approximately 30 - 40 lbs. May be required to work in confined spaces. Must pass the annual fit test requirements for use of a self-contained breathing apparatus and/or a respirator.
