Position Summary
This is manual work involving the repair, maintenance, and renovation of institutional buildings and premises. Employees in this class perform repairs, maintenance, and light renovation to buildings and other structures. Work involves using hand tools, tractor, backhoe, and other equipment. Employees must accomplish assignments with only general supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES:
  • General carpentry, light electrical, light plumbing in remodeling existing facilities. Uses hand tools and carpentry tools to remodel/renovate.
  • Makes repairs to floors and drywall; repairs broken windows and sash weights; repairs doors and locks.
  • Assists in painting buildings, rooms, walls, or other surfaces as assigned.
  • Operates on occasion, such light equipment as forklifts, trucks, jack hammers, and loading equipment as may be provided to aid job accomplishment in accordance with the employee's competence.
  • Makes minor repairs and services autos, trucks, tractors, mowers, and other equipment.
  • Uses tractor as necessary.
  • Runs cable, inspects roofs, patches roof leaks.
  • Complies with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or GED certificate required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in general maintenance work involving the building, electrical, or mechanical trades required.
  • HVAC and plumbing experience preferred.
  • License in specific fields (i.e., contracting, plumbing, etc.) will be required for certain positions.
  • Friendly personality; enthusiastic, positive attitude; evidence of trustworthiness and ethical conduct; effective human relations skills; strong work ethic.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and building repair.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in building, electrical or mechanical trades.
  • Knowledge of drywall work and application of vinyl siding.
  • Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades involved.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Sufficient physical strength to permit the performance of manual tasks; ability to lift 50 pounds from the ground; ability to lift arms above the head.
  • Ability to walk for extended periods of time; ability to walk up and down stairs and climb up and down ladders.

Salary Schedule E-4, Grade 05 - $33,625 - $50,777 based on previous full-time and related experience, as submitted by the candidate in the application packet, subject to verification upon hire.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The wellness premium applies only to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Medical Group #14000 plan for non-Medicare eligible active and retired members, non-Medicare-eligible members on LOA or COBRA, and non-Medicare-eligible spouses on active or retired contracts. If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
