Job description

Under the general direction of the Chief Engineer, the Maintenance Mechanic shall inspect, maintain, install and make repairs to all plumbing, heating and ventilation, water and sewage systems, performs minor repairs to electronic systems as needed. Conduct minor building repairs, does miscellaneous interior, and exterior painting as required, performs all welding and fabrications to specifications, provide sketches and estimates and order materials as indicated. Work detailed herein above. Maintain on a regular basis filter changes and lubrication of air handling, heating and ventilation related equipment on housing units and institution structures. Maintain kitchen and culinary equipment, make repairs to cell doors and hardware, excluding locking mechanisms. Direct the work of three (3) or more inmates, assist other maintenance personnel where needed to cover inmate supervisory needs at the General Shop, Welding Shop, Hospital Maintenance, Culinary Maintenance, Glass/Screen and Small Engine Shop.
Keeps records and prepare reports, maintain inmate records and timekeeping, maintain tool control inventory, perform inmate searches for contraband, inspect premises and maintain the security of the working area and work materials. Under the direction of a Stationary Engineer, the Maintenance Mechanic may work on air condition and refrigeration equipment. All work performed in this manner shall be considered as training in the air conditioning and refrigeration field and should not be construed as an Out of Class Assignment. Each employee shall maintain shops, tools, work benches, work sites and locations in a clean presentable state at all times. Tools and materials are to be maintained in the proper order and organized in an efficient manner to prevent injuries and accidents. Employee shall maintain all shop records and perform all other duties consistent with the needs/requirements of the Institution. Maintain security, leading and supervising inmates, prevents escapes and injury by those persons to themselves and others or to property.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).
Limited term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Dedicated on June 21, 1941, the California Institution for Men (CIM) is a large complex consisting of four separate facilities under the administration of one warden. It was California's third correctional institution and was constructed to relieve the overcrowded conditions of San Quentin State Prison (1852) and Folsom State Prison (1881).

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
