Job description

The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking an experienced candidate to fill the Maintenance Manager position. The Maintenance Manager will oversee the maintenance of the new state of the art Recreation & Swim Complex, a 68,000 square foot facility projected to open in January 2026 including multiple pools, gym, commercial kitchen, event space and multiple public areas. This position will develop and implement a systematic maintenance management plan, ensuring the proper sanitation and maintenance of the pools and overall maintenance conditions of facility operation. They will supervise staff and contractors to coordinate maintenance and cleanliness of the facility. Clear communication with recreation programming staff will be important for coordination around interruptions of facility operations The ideal candidate will have experience managing, assessing, and overseeing the maintenance of a similar facility and a current Certified Pool Operators certification.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  1. Requisitions equipment and materials; reviews bids; prepares specifications; makes vendor contacts; evaluates demonstrations and product alternatives; determines materials, equipment, labor required; prepares cost estimates and project time.
  2. May operate a wide variety of hand and power tools for plumbing, electrical, cabinetry and carpentry, operates and uses forklifts, scaffolding, concrete saw, survey level, transit and other equipment as necessary.
  3. Conducts employee safety and training programs; and maintains related records.
  4. Manages, directs and organizes maintenance operations activities including: construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, streets and grounds.
  5. Participates in the preparation of the division budget; assists in budget implementation; participates in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; administers the approved budget.
  6. Monitors and ensures compliance with consultant contracts.
  7. Researches, compiles and analyzes technical studies and reports; prepares staff reports on projects and recommendations related to division activities.
  8. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for preventive maintenance of City owned/occupied buildings; implements policies and procedures.
  9. Evaluates operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements and modifications; submits justifications for contract as well as in-house maintenance activities; monitors and controls expenditures.
  10. Manages and maintains the Public Works maintenance management system, work requisitions, work orders and work flow within the system. Provides training on the system as needed, Monitors work flow created by the system, adds data, materials and labor to the system, approves and closes workflow within the system.
  11. Inspects facilities, grounds and equipment for safe operations and conditions.
  12. Initiates requisitions for supplies, services and equipment.
  13. Performs related duties as required.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training and/or college level course work in construction management, maintenance and supervision. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field is desirable.
Experience:
Five years of increasingly responsible experience in one or more of the following areas depending on operational needs at the time of recruitment: street repair and maintenance; facility maintenance and/or the construction or building trades (experience with fire codes desirable); parks maintenance; including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California or Nevada driver's license.
Must obtain and maintain a minimum of a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) within one year of hire. A Class "A" CDL is preferred, position will participate in the DOT drug testing program. Other certifications may be required. These certifications include, but are not limited to; HAZMAT, OSHA, UST, Airside certification for Airport Operations, and background check(s), high voltage, as well as other certifications that maybe required by assignment and Department need.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites and some public contact with interruptions.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
