Job description

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) positions to assist in distributing summer meals at the Old Town Newhall and Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy library branches, as well as providing learning and enrichment programming before and after designated meal times. The Lunch at the Library program provides free meals to kids and teens 18 and under with no restrictions on family income. The free meals must be eaten on-site at the participating Library.This position may work up to 20 hours per week, Monday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Lunch at the Library runs from June 1 - July 28, 2024. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Greets and encourages patrons to participate in the Summer Reading program, Lunch at the Library, and answer questions regarding library servicesProvides customer service including greeting customers and answering basic inquiries regarding library hours, general location of library resources, and routine information about programs and servicesRegisters patrons for the summer reading program, and distributes program information and incentivesMaintains the overall clean and professional environment of the community room and kitchenette, and completes daily inspection forms for these areasGathers and records statistics from library programsAssists with the organization, set-up, and clean-up of library facilities; assists staff with set up, room supervision, and program breakdownEnsures meal provider regulations are followed and all health code issues are reported to the appropriate supervisorEducates and assists program participants in proper food diversion practices Addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arisePerforms related duties as directed by a Library Assistant, Librarian, Senior Librarian, and/or Library AdministratorEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Experience working or volunteering in a library, or providing customer service to the public or similar environment is highly desirableBilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirableA valid California driver license is highly desirableAny combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of basic library services, practices and terminology, library equipment and resources, including a personal computer, and common reference toolsStrong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concernsKnowledge of methods and techniques of proper public desk and phone etiquette; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuationKnowledge of basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, spreadsheets, and databases Strong work ethic and the ability to behave ethically and professionally and exercise discretion and sound judgmentAbility to perform a variety of clerical and office support duties of a general and specialized nature in support of library operationsAbility to learn the organization, operation, and services of the Library and outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work groupStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationshipsAbility to make sound decisions within established guidelines and be a creative problem solver Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe mannerAbility to establish and maintain a variety of files and records Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 poundsAPPLCATION PROCESSAn online completed City application form is required to apply for this position. Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.PTS workers are at-will.
