The City of Newton is hiring a Lube Technician at $18.81 an hour.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, the Lube Technician will perform unskilled and semi-skilled mechanical work on a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery. The main responsibility of this position is to repair and maintain, in good operating order, all emergency and non-emergency vehicles and fleet equipment owned by the City. The employee in this position will also perform facility maintenance, some records maintenance, and assist with controlling a spare parts inventory.
Essential Functions:
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on fleet vehicles and machinery;
- Inspects vehicle fluid levels, replenishes as necessary;
- Perform brake jobs;
- Rotate tires;
- Checks tire pressure and adds air if needed;
- Performs minor mechanical repairs on fleet equipment;
- Assists with spare parts inventory;
- Fabricates components, performs welding services;
- Maintains shop tools and equipment;
- Locates and picks up repair parts and supplies;
- Keeps work area clean;
- Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner;
- Maintains fueling station and vehicle wash bay;
- Assists with inspecting facility fire extinguishers.
Marginal Functions:
- Assists Street Division with snow and ice control;
- Assists with the unloading of delivery trucks;
- Performs some buildings and grounds maintenance tasks;
- Other duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Position Requirements:
Experience: This is an entry level position requiring minimum experience. Requires the ability to perform light maintenance and repairs which includes lube, oil, and filter changes and flushing cooling systems. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job after 6 months in the position. Possession of a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Will be required to obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training, ISO 100, 200 and 700.
Skills: Some knowledge of automotive mechanics and technical service on light and heavy-duty vehicles. Some knowledge of tools and diagnostic equipment. The ability to learn how to operate all City owned vehicles and machinery as legally able based on driver’s license. Ability to use a computer.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Problems include determining the cause of vehicle and/or equipment malfunctions.
Decision Making: Decision making is limited in this position.
Accountability: Employee is responsible for maintenance of a fleet of vehicles and equipment. Employee has responsibility for maintaining elements within the facility.
Personal Relations: Continual contact with other city employees, occasional contact with vendors and rare contact with the public.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervision is provided by the Fleet Supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over department personnel.
Residency Requirement: Must live within 30 miles of intersection of First & Main streets.
Working Conditions: Manual labor is required. Working in precarious positions and working with petroleum products are factors in this position.
