Description
The Land and Water Resources Department has two openings for the position of LTE Restoration and Land Management Specialist.
Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Botanist/Naturalist and LTE Park Restoration & Management Coordinator(s), responsible for completing ecological RESTORATION AND LAND MANAGEMENT activities on public lands throughout Dane County.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Evaluate existing vegetation and site conditions. Conduct invasive species removal through multiple methods including herbicide application, weed whacking/mowing, and chainsaw operation. Serve as a prescribed burn crew member, including preparing units and post-burn mop-up/monitoring. Monitor work through all phases of restoration. Provide project communication through updates, personal contacts, notices and meetings with stakeholders. Maintain work task logs and herbicide use reports. Collect, process/clean, and plant native seed. Work cooperatively with volunteers, WI DNR staff, park groups, adjacent landowners, and local municipalities. Ensure project implementation remains compliant with local, state, and federal regulations. Assist in various wildlife surveys including summer deer observation and waterfowl banding activities. Operate and maintain LAND MANAGEMENT equipment including chainsaws, powered cutters, mowers, UTV/ATVs, sprayers and drip torches.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements
Education, Training and Experience:
Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Applicants should have a genuine interest in natural community restoration. Preference will be given to applicants enrolled in or have a degree in a botany, wildlife ecology, biology, or related natural resources field.
Special Requirements:
A valid driver's license and a good driving record required. Final candidate(s) will be subject to passing a thorough driving record background check. Completion of the Wisconsin ATV/OHM Safety Course preferred. Completion of a chainsaw safety course that meets OSHA standards preferred. Completion of NWCG wildfire training courses S-130/190 and I-100/700 and Work Capacity Test preferred. Certified Pesticide Applicators License preferred.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Ability to routinely lift up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to do manual labor, including repetitive lifting, bending, reaching, kneeling and squatting. Work will be primarily outdoors in varying terrains in harsh temperature conditions.

Ability to communicate tactfully with the public and project a positive image. Ability to work well with others in a team and lead groups, when needed. Knowledge in the areas of native plants, vegetation management and restoration techniques. Knowledge of the safe and effective use of herbicides. Ability to read maps and navigate to work locations. Basic knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance including ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, weed whackers, mowers, and fire equipment such as pumps, engines, and hand tools, light and heavy duty vehicles and trailers, commercial mowers and various hand and power tools.
