Licensed Practical nurse – Inpatient Substance use Disorders

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:FLSA Status: Non- Exempt

Provides care, counseling, education and consultation to clients; Work is performed under regular supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Ø Evaluates pre-screenings, conducts intake assessments including CIWA/COWS to determine appropriateness for admission.

Ø Consults with referral sources about medication and health treatment plan/order medications; keeps stock medications; assesses clients for special diets; performs AIMS; gives injections; assists clients with obtaining medications.

Ø Orders prescribed and over the counter medications; maintain medication stock; performs medication counts each shift; maintains STAT box; disposes of unused/expired medications.

Ø Develops, shares, researches, and provides client education about medications, STD/HIV/other illness and about addiction and withdrawal.

Ø Provides HIV/other diseases as well as substance abuse counseling.

Ø Provides crisis intervention and medical services for residential clients when needed.

Ø Documents in clients records on a daily basis; completes treatment plan; complies with agency and regulatory requirements.

Ø Works with detox tech as a team to provide case coordination with clients and community resources to assure continuity of care; performs environmental management assisted by tech.

Ø Participate in clinical staffing, shift report, and other meetings.

 

other FUNCTIONS:

Ø Train new staff including detox techs.

Ø Administers TB test/screening to clients and staff.

Ø Be available for calls after hours and be able to fill in for other staff if needed.

Ø Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices and techniques of professional nursing; thorough knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the use of narcotics and other medications; thorough knowledge of evidenced based treatment, diagnostic, immunization and related medical services for clients; thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies pertaining to nursing services of the agency; ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, physicians and associates; knowledge of MS Office, to include Word and Excel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalency; any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited licensed practical nursing program; must be a licensed Practical Nurse allowed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At least 3 years of experience in nursing, substance disorders, and/or mental health are required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This work requires light physical effort working almost exclusively with lightweight materials (up to 25 pounds). The working conditions are good; may involve occasional exposure to some disagreeable elements; accidents are improbable other than minor injuries; health hazards are negligible; some mental effort and stress may be involved resulting in inconvenience and frustration. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Attends training and maintains certifications as required by the Agency and regulatory guidelines.
