Please Note: The salary posted above includes the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to its location in Shoreline, WA in King County.
This position inspects a wide array of industries that generate different kinds of dangerous waste from various processes, with a focus on the Lower Duwamish Waterway. Each day promises something new and different. Other Ecology programs, King County, EPA, and the City of Seattle are all involved in a major Superfund cleanup of the Duwamish River, of which this position will play a role.
Note: This position offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Environmental Specialist field and achieve the goal class of an Environmental Specialist 4. Candidates will be considered at the Environmental Specialist 3 and theEnvironmental Specialist 4levels, depending on their qualifications. What makes this role unique?
This position focuses on dangerous waste inspections of facilities located in the Lower Duwamish Waterway, an area of Environmental Justice concern. Together with other agencies and internal programs, this position contributes to EPA's Superfund cleanup of the Duwamish River by ensuring risks of re-contamination are minimized at the source.What you will do:
- Conduct inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with Washington's Dangerous Waste Regulations
- Author inspection reports; review the reports of fellow Compliance Unit members
- Follow up on violations observed with informal and formal enforcement actions, as appropriate
- Coordinate with other internal programs and outside agencies
- Prepare and distribute outreach materials
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
At the Environmental Specialist 3 level (Salary Range 53: $4,832-$6,507 Monthly) (In-Training)
A total of Six (6) years of experience and/or education as described below:
- Professional level Experience in: Environmental analysis or control or environmental planning.
- Education: Involving a major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license.

Preferred education and/or experience:
- Work experience within the fields of waste reduction or pollution prevention is highly preferred, specifically experience and knowledge of RCRA, chapter 173-303 WAC, and other laws and regulations related to the management of Hazardous Waste.
Preferred knowledge and abilities:
- Knowledge of industrial processes involving hazardous substances, generation of hazardous or solid wastes, air emissions and wastewater discharges.
- Ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals and exercise the soft skills needed to network within business and academic communities.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships or engage with a diversity of interested parties and people (including historically underserved and underrepresented communities, communities of color, Tribes, Indigenous people, and low-income communities).
- Experience applying or familiarity with practices and policies related to equity, environmental justice, or civil rights.
