Macomber Primary SchoolSchool Nurse (RN)School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identification and assistance in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning process for students.The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Nurse is especially prepared and uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment and referral procedures.1. Assesses and evaluates student's health, and the degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress2. Utilizes effective techniques to counsel students, parents, and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems3.
Assumes a leadership role in the identification of students with health needs that interfere with effective learning4. Provides programs for the prevention and control of disease5. Coordinates health services with other health disciplines in order to fulfill a total health education program6. Coordinates health services with community health programs7.
Observes school facilities and recommends modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety of students and school personnel8. Responds to frequently encountered health and social problems: 9. Collaborates/cooperates with community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social services needs of students10. Organizes, carries out and reports on mandated health screening programs and makes appropriate referrals and follow-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening failures11.
Acts as a resource to the student, parent, principal, and teachers in matter pertaining to health12. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to administer medications properly, in keeping with school policy on administration of medication in the school13. Assesses family history and home situations which may affect a student's health via home visits when necessary14. Completes home evaluations for special education IEP evaluations.
Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems15. Maintains an accurate health record on each student16. Documents First Aid and illness care provided to staff and students. Completes accident reports, and maintains a log of health room activity17.
Screens all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and makes recommendations for exclusion of students for lack of compliance to school administration18. Recommends exclusion and monitors readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases19. Evaluate student injuries and provide intervention and follow up care as needed20. Maintains and orders First Aid supplies and other health equipment in an appropriate location in the school21.
Serve as counselor to students, staff, and families regarding various issues22. Conduct individual and small group health sessions23, Serve on the district health advisory council24. Evaluate school health programs and recommend appropriate program revisions, as needed25. Work with school to review school procedures and policies relative to student health26.
Provide field trip coverage as needed27. Confer with Superintendent, Principal and other administrative staff on public health issues28. May provide oversight to LPN29. Liaise with school physician30.
Secure bids, assist with the ordering process and distribution of health office supplies when orders are received31. Assist with training for health related issues, as needed32. Work with district/school to review school procedures and policies relative to student health.33. Performs other nursing duties as assigned
