Job Summary:

The Logistics Manager (LM) oversees both inbound and outbound freight via Hummingbird’s small box truck fleet and 3rd party providers. The LM must be able to communicate and coordinate resources for accurate transport and enjoy developing systems to maximize potential, create a positive culture, and achieve goals. The LM must be experienced with the maintenance and repair of a fleet of box trucks with a focus on efficiency, expense reduction, and sustainability. Managing and coaching a team to inspire the best in each individual is pivotal. The LM manages relationships with 3rd party carriers, freight-for-hire customers, and maintenance companies while maintaining effective systems to meet operational goals. The LM is responsible for all distribution systems of the company in coordination with the Purchasing, Sales, Customer Service, Warehouse, and Company Leadership.


Manages a team of 4, including a Logistics Coordinator and 3 drivers with Class B CDL. Our fleet is made up of 4 box trucks (two 26 ft. CDL, and two 18ft Non-CDL).


Essential Functions:

  • Ensure that training and development of coworkers in logistics supports safe work outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations on strategic planning for Logistics.
  • Participate and contribute to strong safety culture by working safe and supporting safety with coworkers.
  • Comply with all applicable company, governmental, and regulatory agency policies and guidelines.
  • Use all company systems in compliance with established policies and procedures including workplace safety and food safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure team members follow established policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the delivery of all customer orders on company trucks and 3rd party carriers. Assign drivers, order routes, and stops, and communicate routinely with customer service department to ensure customers receive excellent service.
  • Oversee the pick up of all purchase orders on company truck and 3rd party carriers.
  • Oversee delivery staffing requirements and scheduling.
  • Train truck delivery drivers and ensure proper record keeping and compliance with applicable DOT regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
  • Analyze and implement Logistics systems for efficiency improvements and growth preparation.
  • Oversee ordering Logistics supplies and manage department budget.
  • Maintain communication with Director of Operations and other department managers and assist in maintaining healthy and open communications in Logistics.
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations, Sales and Purchasing Managers, and CEO to ensure effective long-term strategizing of delivery logistics that are in alignment with sales goals and strategies.
  • Provide logistical support for company delivery drivers while on route. Be available by cell phone and email to receive and respond to driver needs.
  • Manage all third-party carrier relationships and ensure carrier compliance with company third-party carrier policies.
  • Ensure that customers & vendors receive excellent service from third-party carriers. Recruit new third-party carriers to support route expansion or solve existing route challenges.
  • Manage company freight for hire business and coordinate with purchasers to maximize backhaul opportunities for inbound freight.
  • Identify, screen, and recruit new freight for hire clients and provide excellent service to those clients. Ensure freight for hire compliance with all regulatory standards and company policies.
  • Balance multiple priorities, including finances, operations, and company values to provide a financially sustainable service while not impeding on company delivery abilities.
  • Manage personnel in the Logistics department; participate in: hiring, development, training, discipline, termination, etc.
  • Implement and maintain effective systems for efficiency, cost controls, ergonomic improvements, and best practices; maintain company delivery procedures manual.
  • Work with the Director of Operations to implement appropriate data gathering systems for tracking logistics efficiencies. Analyze data regularly and communicate clearly-organized findings and recommended actions to team members and management. Collaborate on solutions to drive improvements as needed.
  • Oversee delivery equipment and vehicle maintenance, repairs and upgrades. Research upgrades as needed and make recommendations to the Director of Operations. 
  • Act as a back-up delivery Driver on routes as needed to cover shortages in staffing due to vacation, illness, or other shortages.
  • Be committed to solid company profit consistent with our mission and principles.
  • Communicate in-person, via phone, and over email in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Participate in department meetings and trainings as needed and/or scheduled.
  • Complete company-sponsored training in Lean and Kaizen culture, use Lean and Kaizen principles in collaboration with co-workers to reduce waste, improve customer outcomes, and support company goals and objectives.
  • Give great customer service, understanding that every relationship counts. Build mutually rewarding, long term relationships with coworkers, customers, vendors, and community.
  • Help drive our sustainability practices through participation and helping improve company sustainability initiatives and programs. Complete company-sponsored training and participate in Hummingbird’s waste-stream reduction program, minimizing waste and properly sorting waste-stream items into designated receptacles.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: 2+ years of college or equivalent experience required. 


Training Requirements (licenses, programs, or certificates):

  • Current Class B Commercial Driver License preferred (must be willing to obtain CDL via on the job training program).
  • Certificate of Completion of Reasonable Suspicion Course required within 30 days of hire date.
  • Forklift certified (within 3 months of working at Hummingbird)


Skill Requirements:

  • Detail oriented, well organized, responsible, and responsive. 
  • Strong computer and internet literacy, including Microsoft and Google Suites.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate, and track multiple complex projects at a time with excellent communication and follow-through.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with peers, coworkers, and outside business partners.
  • Ability to thoughtfully coach, train, and develop Logistics team and inspire staff to excellence. 
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Strong skills for route planning & interdepartmental communication. 
  • Basic understanding of truck mechanics for informed decisions regarding maintenance and repairs. 
  • Intermediate to advanced math, logic and problem solving skills; able to follow a budget. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing Organizational and Operational needs; ability to lead others through change. 
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential data as required by law and company protocol. 
  • Ability to work well individually and with others; collaborative team player who seeks to learn, support and grow within the team.


Experience:

  • Logistics Management experience in Transportation/Distribution preferred.
  • Delivery management experience, is required.
  • Supervisory skills with a demonstrated ability to inspire staff to excellence while improving systems for safety and efficiency is required.
  • Experience as a Truck Delivery Driver is preferred.
  • Experience with ELD, DOT (FMCSA), OSHA, and/or DMV regulations is required. 
  • Knowledge of/experience with maximizing sustainability when using delivery vehicles , including using alternative fuels, is a plus
    Fork Lift Experience preferred. 
  • Working knowledge of USDA food storage and shipping regulations preferred. 
  • Experience using inventory management software preferred.  
  • Experience, whether personal or professional, with the organic or natural food industry is a plus. 


Physical, Mental and Visual Requirements:

  • While Hummingbird Wholesale strives to create opportunities for desk workers to have regular tasks which get them up and moving around, the Logistics Manager spends the majority of their time in a stationary position at a desk. The coworker must be able to operate a computer for many hours a day.
  • In support of some essential job functions, the position requires the Logistics Manager to work in commercial food production and warehouse environments. While in these environments, the coworker must be able to safely comply with all company and regulatory rules and guidelines.
  • The position requires frequent and repeated exposure to major food allergens, including but not limited to, wheat, tree nuts, dairy, and soybeans.

Other Information:

  • The Logistics Manager may work in a shared office, and there are frequent interruptions. Of course, there are many benefits to this arrangement, however, it may also limit one’s ability to concentrate.
  • Travel to visit potential or current vendors, customers, or attend trade shows, educational conferences, or industry events may be necessary throughout the year.
  • Must be available to drivers by phone when they are en route; generally 6 am to 6 pm but also earlier or later in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to spend up to several nights away from home when covering other driver’s routes.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds repetitively.
