Job Purpose

The Locomotive Aftermarket Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) Manager will drive product performance improvements through the application of specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to tasks/projects associated with the products we design, manufacture, sell, and other related services we provide. Work involves leading a team of engineers whose responsibility is ensuring the continued success of PRL’s products and the satisfaction of its customers. The Aftermarket CPI Manager is responsible for understanding and setting priorities within the Aftermarket CPI team, interfacing with, and answering questions from customer representatives, understanding warranty failure and product reliability data to identify trends, prioritizing and driving continuous improvement projects, and providing regular updates/presentations to internal and external customers. This position interfaces with individuals from across the organization – namely Field Service, Warranty, Sales, Supplier Quality, and Production/Production Quality.

Key Job Elements

  • Manage a team of engineers who are responsible for recognizing, analyzing, and resolving technical problems involving Progress Rail products;
  • Coordinate service activities necessary to resolve problems or monitor product performance at Progress Rail or on customer property;
  • Communicate status of product performance and problem resolution to Progress Rail management and field personnel as well as customer representatives;
  • Understand warranty and product reliability data to assist in identifying failure trends;
  • Recommend product/process improvements based on failure analysis;
  • Identify, prioritize, and support continuous product improvement projects;
  • Support technical design reviews;
  • Oversee the writing of technical documents to convey modernizations, modifications, and current maintenance practices to both internal and external customers;
  • Creates and participates in the development and improvement of departmental procedures;
  • Trains develops and evaluates employees;
  • Creates and participates in the development and improvement of departmental procedures;
  • Participates in the selection of new employees;
  • Travel as required to perform duties;
  • Special assignments as needed;

Education / Training

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent training/experience.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects of varying complexity;
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult;
  • High level of interpersonal skills required to work effectively with customers and others;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required in dealing with customers and internal stakeholders;
  • Comfortable using common computer applications to perform routine tasks (SAP, MS Office);
  • Ability to work independently and with others;
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design;
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications;
  • Understanding of design / manufacturing processes;
  • Willing to travel on extended basis as needed (domestic and international);
  • Basic locomotive knowledge.

Preferred:
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt or higher;
  • Knowledge of Shainin Red X methodologies;
  • Project management experience and/or training;
  • Knowledge of divisional service and warranty policies and procedures;
  • High level of locomotive product knowledge and mechanical aptitude.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions:
  • Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);
  • Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment.
Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
  • Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;
  • Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;
  • Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
