Job description

UFG is looking for a Technical Leader - Claims to join their team.  In this role you will be a solutions-oriented advisor is responsible advancing the technical expertise of individual adjusters with varying levels of experience and on files with varying levels of complexity.  This advisor may also directly manage (proper handling, disposition, regulatory & compliance) complex or high severity claims, spanning multiple jurisdictions, and will provide technical coaching, guidance and authority grants on specific claims to support a high level of customer service and fair and equitable resolutions.   This advisor partners with Claims-Specialization Leader and Corp Claims Technical Directors to develop tools, training, and resources for team members to support the best global resolution of claims while adhering to our Gold Standard of Claims best practices. Responsible for fostering a constructive culture where all members contribute to our success.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the claims leadership or advisory team, you will support operational excellence and develop a high performing team:

  • Deliver quality products with a high level of service to support equitable resolution of claims and to deliver on our promises
  • Create an inclusive culture where everyone is inspired to make their maximum contribution
  • Coach and develop team members, including collaboration with Claims Excellence and Learning & Knowledge, specific to individual contributor or specific specialization team needs
  • Support Claims People leaders with performance management, change management and hiring/retention
  • Assign claims to appropriate team members based on skills, staffing, workload, complexity, etc. (triaging and assigning litigated claims)
  • Assign appropriate authority to team members based on their skills, ability, and knowledge
  • Provide technical consultation, authority and coaching on individual claims files, including the investigation, exposure, coverage, damages, reserves and settlements. Conduct team roundtables and other collaborative learning/coaching activities
  • Ensure that claims are managed in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and case law and that required forms are filed (e.g. Reinsurance, Reserve Notification, Risk Evaluation, and State form filings and DCI)
  • Partner with Specialization team leadership, Claims Excellence, Training and Corp Claims Technical Directors to identify and execute opportunities for continuous improvement and advancement of team’s technical skills. Conduct required Claims Excellence reviews
  • Responsible for adherence to Claims Best Practices, to meet regulatory and compliance requirements and for consistent and timely application of our reserving philosophy
  • Identify trends via management reports/dashboards & via file reviews and consults. Communicate trends to leadership and collaborate on solutions
  • Team technical responsibilities, such as reinsurance reports, large loss notes, PLRB or vendor recommendations
  • Promote fiscal responsibility and awareness of expenses in claims handling (internal and external) to achieve company standards and to operate with a budget
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers, including but not limited, to underwriters, auditors, marketing, and agents. This may include agency visits, claims reviews and presentations
  • Act as a SME, or identifying appropriate team members as SMEs, where expertise supports UFG initiatives.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • HS diploma, or equivalent, required
  • 4 year college degree preferred

Certifications/Designations

  • Industry certifications such as AIC, SCLA of the AEI, CPCU are preferred.
  • Must have, or be willing to work to obtain within 3 years post-hire, CPCU designation (or other advanced designation as agreed upon with leader)
  • Meet the appropriate state licensing requirements (or obtain required licensing).

Experience:

  • 5+ years of insurance industry experience
  • 3+ years of claims handling experience with demonstrated aptitude in handling advanced, complex coverage issues, injury evaluations, liability analysis, negotiation techniques, or other advanced, relevant claims technical experience as well as a good working knowledge of the claim litigation process. 
  • Experience related to being a mentor, team or project leader preferred

Working Conditions:

  • General office environment
  • Occasionally this job requires working irregular hours, evenings, and weekends with occasional overnight travel.
  • Occasionally the job requires work in the field with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, smoke, and soot.
  • This leader deals with large amounts of company money and is charged with the responsibility to handle wisely.

 

The salary for this position generally ranges from $84,000/ year to $175,000 / year.  This range is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs and other considerations permitted by law.  The range may vary above and below the stated amounts.
