LIGHTING TECHNICIAN

MIM Music Theater was designed and built with the same passion for music that fills the museum. It is one of the best theaters of its size in the world, not only because of its exceptional acoustics, comfort, and technical capabilities, but also because it is part of MIM – the most extensive collection of musical instruments from around the world in any one location. MIM’s Music Theater presents over 280 concerts annually that span the cultures and genres of the world.

Position Summary: The Lighting Technician will serve as the primary lighting designer and operator for the theater and will also support the backstage and technical operations of this state-of-the-art facility, working very closely with the Production Manager and the Technical Manager. The Lighting Technician will operate the lighting and sound components of musical performances, ensuring a timely adherence to the day-of-show schedule and a smooth and collaborative spirit. The technician is also responsible for assisting in the set-up of equipment prior to shows and breaking down of equipment at the end of shows. Making sure equipment setup is safe for artists and other technicians to be around, as well as maintaining and repairing equipment, are also part of the position.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Prepare light, audio, backline instruments and other production systems for concerts and events and operate these systems during concerts and events, with the responsibility to independently make artistic judgments, interpret requirements and anticipate and resolve problems to accomplish successful performances and presentations (an average of 4 instances weekly)
• Act as stage manager for performances when needed.
• Oversee and participate in loading and unloading vehicles for performances at the theater.
• Read and understand artist’s stage plots and input lists.
• Clean, repair and maintain the theater lighting and sound, as well as the stage floor and all backstage areas. Report any needed items or repairs to Technical Manager.
• Monitor inventory of production supplies and ensure sufficient supplies are available.
• Assist in advancing shows when Production Manager is away.
• Help to train over-hire staff in conjunction with the Production Manager and Technical Manager.
• Focus lighting fixtures in a safe and effective manner
• Operate PowerPoint pre-show slides and projector.
• Program and operate ETC Ion XE console during performances.
• Assist with load-out after performances.
• Serve as a secondary production contact for the Events Department regarding the technical needs of rental clients using the MIM Music Theater. (Artistic Director serves as initial point of contact.) In conjunction with other Events staff, coordinate schedules, equipment, and facility usage; offer logistics and budgeting assistance as needed; and assist users with contract compliance.
• Maintain positive and productive relationships with outside vendors, including leveraging/negotiating favorable arrangements for MIM whenever possible. Participate in promoting general awareness and favorable impressions of the MIM Music Theater among MIM staff, vendors, and external constituents.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

• Ability to work a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Operate and maintain stage equipment including but not limited to stage lighting instruments, microphones, speakers, mixing boards, lighting boards, and backline instruments.
• Minimum of 2-3 years of working experience in lighting preferred, also audio experience preferred. While both are not necessary, the applicant must be willing to become fluent in both and be willing to be scheduled for either position as needed.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Adaptable to changing conditions.
• Ability to problem solve and develop quick solutions.
• Learn and apply new information or new skills.

• Experience operating PowerPoint.
• Ability to program and operate ETC Ion XE console.
• Ability to effectively interface with musicians and their representatives.

• Proficiency with video systems or a willingness to be trained (video switching, video production infrastructure, video editing/post-production.)
• Availability to work extended and flexible hours and work schedules, primarily including afternoons/evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Note: The hours will vary each week/month based on theater performances and museum events and will require mostly nights and weekends – schedule will vary based upon museum events calendars.
