- Operates light vehicles and equipment in the installation, maintenance and repair functions associated with the assigned functional area; depending on area of assignment, operates equipment that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, flatbed, compactors, back-hoes, loaders, chippers, pan, dozer, drag lines, forklifts, graders, stripers, rollers, loaders, trenchers, hydraulic excavator, semi-tractor trailer, truck mounted crane and heavy equipment/trucks.
- Identifies potential hazards for the general public during installation, maintenance and repair projects; determines appropriate equipment operating procedures accordingly.
- Performs labor intensive, moderately complex construction, grounds maintenance and repair work; works independently or as part of a work crew in installation, maintenance and repair activities in the management and care of County infrastructure and properties in one or more of the skilled and semi-skilled disciplines, e.g plumbing, masonry, carpentry, flooring, irrigation electric, asphalt repairs, sandbag/headwall repairs, sod installation, etc.
- Participates in the construction, renovation and restoration of streets, bridges, solid waste, utility systems and public works landscapes and grounds.
- Performs work in the safe and proper operation of tools, vehicles and equipment in compliance with prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g., sets barricades and cones, preps for excavation and confined space entry, performs traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards.
- Inspects completed work for proper operation, adherence to work orders, and safety.
- Performs general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and machinery, e.g., lubricates, services and fuels vehicles and equipment; performs routine light maintenance to vehicles and equipment; washes and maintains vehicles and equipment.
- Attends safety meetings and/or participate in safety inspections.
- Performs inspection and recording duties as prescribed by department, County, State and related regulatory standards, policies, procedures and requirements.
- Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Experience: One (1) year responsible experience in the operation of a wide variety of construction, maintenance and repair vehicles, Light Equipment and machinery; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Miscellaneous:
- Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Florida Driver's License (Passenger, Hazardous Materials, and/or Tanker endorsement may be required depending on area of assignments).
- Class B is acceptable with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within three (3) months of employment.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to read and interpret various documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and related documentation.
- Ability to operate various vehicles, trucks, light construction equipment and machinery, and other gasoline and diesel driven motors, e.g., service trucks, forklifts, back hoe, grader, bulldozer, dump trucks.
- Knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas and hydraulic powered tools and equipment used in the assigned functional area.
- Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
- Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor.
- Ability to make minor adjustments or repairs to construction machinery, tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of the hazards involved and of applicable safety precautions and established safety precautions essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
- Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50-100 pounds).
- Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
- Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass and various chemicals.
- 100 pounds maximum lifting.
- Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
- Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
