Description
The full range of this position is listed. The City typically hires in at minimum to 12.5% above based on experience.
Lift Station Operator I: $19.64 -29.46 (Class Spec 5385)
Lift Station Operator II: $21.11 - 31.67 (Class Spec 5382)
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Lift Station Operator I and II is responsible for monitoring the City's pumping stations to ensure proper operation. This work is performed under close supervision - the incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions; work is checked frequently through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
NOTE: The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position or to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
Inspect daily for the proper operation of pumps, valves, control systems, alarm systems, alternators, dehumidifiers, and conditions of wet and dry wells.
Check and record all fluid levels and test run emergency generators on a weekly basis.
Record the voltage and amperage readings at each Lift Station monthly.
Calculate and record pump run time three times per week.
Inspect and assist in the wiring, pump, and valve repairs with mechanics or electricians.
Replace filters and filter rocks; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
Perform preventive maintenance including wet and dry well cleaning, painting, application of chemicals, collection of trash, and yard maintenance.
Perform Lift Station emergency on-call duties on a rotating basis (six-week rotation).
Perform other work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules, and practices of the work.
General knowledge of pumping stations and related equipment.
Ability to calculate pump running time and record data.
Ability to inspect pumping station equipment, troubleshoot, and correct malfunctions.
Ability to use and understand voltage and amperage meters.
Ability to climb ladders and work in enclosed below ground level areas.
Ability to tow/maneuver small and medium sized trailers.
Ability to react and respond intelligently in emergency situations.
Ability to remain on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and other related concerns.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.
Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.
This position is performed with general knowledge - the incumbent is generally familiar with information contained in relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field; has ability to use relevant sources to obtain specific or supplemental information.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Lift Station Operator I:
High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of one year of experience in wastewater utility.
Lift Station Operator II:
High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of three years of experience in wastewater utility.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities, and other competencies required for the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE: All certifications must be current at the time of application, and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.
Lift Station Operator I:
Possess a Florida Water Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Class "C" Wastewater Collection certification or have ability to obtain one within 1 year.
Lift Station Operator II:
Possess a Florida Water Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Class "B" Wastewater Collection certification or have ability to obtain one within 1 year.
Supplemental Information
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Physical
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force repetitively to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition objects.
Ability to traverse about a variety of city facilities/jobsites, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to ascend/descend stairs, scaffolds, and ladders.
Ability to remain stationary at jobsites for extended periods of time and repetitively operate related equipment for repairs/maintenance.
Ability to manipulate objects, demonstrate small, precise movements, and operate necessary equipment such as small hand and power tools repetitively or continuously.
Ability to position oneself to work in confined or difficult to reach spaces.
Environmental
Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, sun, extreme temperatures, odors, dirt and dust, loud noises, and hazardous chemicals, etc.
Sensory
Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
