LIFEGUARD - PART-TIME
General Statement of Duties
The LIFEGUARD is responsible for the safety and direct supervision of the patrons and fellow staff members in the pool, on the pool deck, in the spa/sauna area and in the fitness center. Lifeguards achieve and maintain high safety and performance standards in compliance with River Road Park and Recreation District philosophies, policies and procedures. Preference will be given to those that have availability to work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00am-4:00pm. Additional hours will be available throughout the summer.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor, Aquatic Program Coordinator, and/or the Building Supervisor. Performance reviewed by Aquatic Supervisor and Aquatic Program Coordinator with input from the Building Supervisor(s).
Exposure Classification
The Lifeguard position, as a result of the job responsibilities as identified under Areas of Responsibilities, is classified in River Road Park and Recreation District's Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan as a Classification ONE position.
Areas of Responsibility
Public Supervision: Supervises patrons by interpreting and enforcing River Road Park and Recreation District policies, procedures and guidelines.
Public Safety: Supervises patrons and fellow staff members by enforcing safety policies, procedures and guidelines. Performs and/or assists in rescues and first aid in compliance with River Public Safety Road Park and Recreation District safety and emergency guidelines.
Alerts immediate supervisor of any condition(s) violating District standards and/or State of Oregon Health Division Swimming Pool/Spa Rules.
Public Relations: Maintains a polite and courteous rapport with the public. Manages public concerns as directed.
Policy Compliance: Adheres to all River Road Park and Recreation District employee policies and procedures as identified and outlined in the River Road Park and Recreation District Employee Handbook. Adheres to all River Road Park and Recreation District Aquatic/Fitness Center policies and procedures as identified and outlined in the “Lifeguard Minimum Standards” document.
Other: Reports for duty in full uniform. Participates in staff in-service orientations, trainings, testing, and lifeguard meetings. General custodial responsibilities, including laundry.

Class 1 - Skills Test: Saturday, April 13th, 8:30-3:30
Class 2 - Saturday, April 20th, 8:30-3:30
Class 3 - Sunday, April 21st, 8:30-3:30
Class 4 - Saturday, April 27th, 8:30-3:30
Class 5 - Sunday, April 28th, TBD
Desirable Qualifications:
Prior lifeguard experience, preferably in a Starfish Aquatics Institute partner facility, but not required.
Knowledge of safe aquatic environment practices; lifeguard “best practices”; general water safety; lifesaving methods; first aid and emergency procedures in an aquatic/fitness center environment; basic customer service practices; basic office procedures, practices and equipment; basic English and grammar; or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
Ability to maintain constant, dedicated surveillance of the pool, surrounding area(s) and/or specific zone of responsibility; act calmly and effectively in emergency situations; meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties; identify hazards; interpret, explain and adhere to River Road Park and Recreation District policies, procedures and guidelines; address guests courteously and tactfully; work effectively with people of all ages, ethnic origins, and social-economic backgrounds; establish and maintain a courteous working relationship with fellow employees; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; maintain a neat, professional appearance; and, report for assigned hours as scheduled.
Working Conditions:
The job functions and responsibilities of a River Road Park and Recreation District Lifeguard requires the utmost care and concentration while exposed to a variety of physical and/or environmental elements, including, but not limited to: dust, noise, heat, humidity and pool chemicals. Lifeguards may be required to stand for lengthy periods and/or walk on sloped, often wet, deck surfaces. At any given moment, a River Road Park and Recreation District Lifeguard may be required to: lift (in excess of 50 lbs.), climb, bend, squat, kneel, reach and/or push. In addition, a River Road Park and Recreation District Lifeguard may be required to carry heavy (30-50 lbs.) equipment. Finally, a River Road Park and Recreation District Lifeguard may be exposed to a stressful emergency situation and/or will be required to assist/address a distraught, or difficult, individual.
Additional Compensation
Employees receive free use of the Aquatic facility and Fitness Center.
