Job description

Responsible for maintenance and routine service work on fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems. Duties include troubleshooting various brands of fire panels (i.e., Notifier, Fire Lite, EST, Vigilant, Potter, etc.) on both conventional and addressable style systems. Must be able to perform basic sprinkler repair work involving system isolation, draining, sprinkler head replacement, and system restore verification. Responsible for completing appropriate paperwork for documentation of work performed.

  • Perform fire alarm repairs ranging from complete system replacement to individual troubleshooting of fire alarm control panels, voice evacuation systems, booster power supplies, signaling line circuit devices, and notification devices.
  • Perform fire sprinkler repairs.
  • Review blueprints, schematics, and system layouts for fire alarm and sprinkler projects. Incorporate revisions of drawings for as-builts upon completion of a project.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of fire pumps and other NFPA 20 requirements.
  • Remain current on new products, services, protocols, and standards in support of Life Safety development and equipment procurement.
  • Follow electrical, mechanical and safety installation guidelines outlined in NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 13, and NFPA 101.
  • Pull wire, install devices, wire panels, and program or troubleshoot devices.
  • Prioritize work orders and service calls daily along with completing documentation as needed.
  • Complete work logs, work orders, and various paperwork necessary for documentation of work and services performed. Enter data into the computer.
  • Respond to emergencies as required (i.e.: medical, terrorist, injuries, bomb threats, breaches of security, and notifying security officers).
  • Understand and follow department and industry safety standards.
  • Advise DOF (Director of Facilities) and Deputy DOF of project status and operational problems.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials in an orderly and safe condition.
  • Follow all applicable fiscal county policies concerning attendance, documentation of work, dress and personal appearance, hazard and alarm, confidentiality, and licensing and regulation.
  • Respond to 24 hr. emergency call back system and provide after-hours work as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate or equivalent, trade school or vocational school, or working toward an associate degree in electronics, computer technology, HVAC, or construction trades, plus 2-3 years of related industry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties listed above. Strong work ethic, troubleshooting skills, ability to follow outlined procedures, and able to plan work and work independently. Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and representatives of other departments. Must possess a Texas Driver's License. Must be able to obtain and hold a government security clearance. NICET I and/or II certified is a plus, but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Installation, configuration, and maintenance of equipment, and cabling for Life Safety systems including fire alarms and fire sprinkler systems. Working knowledge of Industry Standards including NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 13 and NFPA 101. Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures. Complete work orders and daily logs; identify numbers and order correct parts; perform mathematical calculations; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. Apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand; use hands; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must have the ability to work in confined spaces such as chases and ceilings, frequently bend, stoop, squat, lie down, crawl, walk, and climb ladders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds, such as tools and equipment, and must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to focus. Employee will be required to work in confinement areas, office buildings, and warehouses with standard incandescent and fluorescent lighting, to handle and properly dispose of hazardous chemicals, and work in areas of loud noise.
