EDUCATION :
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing One year of experience in a clinical or hospital setting


CERTIFICATION :

Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED) Certification by the American Heart Association

Current certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to administer Acanthosis Nigrican, Hearing and Vision screening

Valid Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse Certificate issued by the Texas Board of Nursing


High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.


PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY :
Responsible, under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) School Nurse, for any medical related procedures to be performed during the school day as well as medication administration for those students who are prescribed medication during the school day. Provides specialized health care procedures for severely disabled students. Provides direct basic care, minor first aid, and minor emergency care for ill and injured students and staff; makes appropriate referrals to the RN; dispenses medication according to District Policy and Health Services Protocols; and maintains student health records and electronic HealthCheck under the direction of the RN. Assists RN in maintaining the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff; managing the physical health conditions of students.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Works under the direct supervision of the campus RN, a nearby RN (when LVN is alone in the clinic) or the Health Services nurse administrators.
2. Provides direct basic care, minor first aid, and minor emergency care for ill and injured students and staff; according to established District Policy and Procedures, within the LVN scope of practice.
3. Provides direct, one-on-one care to students with special needs.
4. Provides toileting and diaper changing to students as needed.
5. Manages ventilator needs of students, as well as tracheostomy care and management.
6. Travels with and provides care to students on the school bus, between their home and a district campus.
7. Travels with and provides care to students during community and special activities outside of the district.
8. Assumes other responsibilities related to caring for students with special needs.
9. Communicates with the RN relative to matters of non-routine nature.
10. Consults with RN if unsure about policies, procedures, or protocols, self-motivated to keep up with the electronic Health Services Manual updates on a periodic basis.
11. Secures immediate medical care for students in emergency situations.
12. Reports situations requiring the RN’s assessment and/or interventions to the RN immediately.
13. Utilizes a systemic approach to provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care by collecting data and performing focused nursing assessments and implementing appropriate aspects for care within the LVN’s scope of practice.
14. Documents pertinent student health information completely and accurately in the electronic record HealthCheck system, records findings obtained during the student visit to the clinic.
15. Communicates with parents to report information regarding illnesses, injuries, and accidents.
16. Prepares and dispenses daily medications and documents administration according to District policy and protocols.
17. Administers insulin or assists in the administration of insulin to diabetic students, including assisting with carbohydrate counting, the calculation of proper insulin dosages, and insuring proper administration techniques.
18. Monitors blood glucose levels or supervises such monitoring for diabetic students.
19. Appropriate administration of emergency mediations (rectal diastat, glucagon, epinephrine).
20. Assists in the administration of other medications to students as prescribed.
21. Maintains accurate records of medication administered and documents immediately in HealthCheck.
22. Performs prescribed procedures/treatments per written PCP orders: such as gastric tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, tracheostomy suctioning, blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration and other delegated procedures after training and successful completion of a skills checklist as monitored by the RN.
23. Participates in the formulation, development, modification, implementation and evaluation of the student health care plan based on physician’s orders and individual student needs necessary for the safety and well-being of the students.
24. Communicates need for the development of student specific nursing care plans for students with special health care needs.
25. Collaborates with campus administrators, under the guidance of the RN, to ensure compliance with ARD committee decisions related to Health Services.
26. Reports knowledge or suspicion of communicable diseases to the RN.
27. Maintains current certifications of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillator (AED), and state mandated screening certifications. Attends the Drug Impairment and Behavior Recognition for Education Professionals DIBREP.
28. Directs care of the student health care needs of both verbal and nonverbal students who may or may not be able to demonstrate illness and/or injury through traditional methods (i.e., talking, writing, and pointing).
29. Assists with health screening of the students, which may include help in scheduling, organizing and documenting height, weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, scoliosis and Acanthosis Nigrican screenings as required by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and District Policy.
30. Performs receptionist duties (i.e., answers the telephone, signs in students, transports students, attends staff meetings, in-service programs, and committee meetings as assigned.
31. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, written communication from physicians, parents and other documents pertaining to the student either written or electronically organized and current.
32. Maintains confidentiality of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) on all health information and records related to the district for student, staff or visitor.
33. Maintains accurate immunization records electronically for all students enrolled, per state immunization laws.
34. Reports delinquent records to the RN and notifies parents during the 30-day report period.
35. Participates in health teaching to promote, attain, and maintain optimum health and education for staff, students and community.
36. Communicates regularly with RN regarding clinic issues and health and safety hazards; immediately reports emergency/urgent issues; all crises are reported to the campus administrator.
37. On rare occasions, may be asked to fill in as the “solo” nurse on a campus when the district has a staffing shortage.
38. May be required to work on off days with compensation equal to hourly salary rate.
39. Maintains clinic inventory, orders supplies and equipment in a timely manner.
40. Participates in all staff developments, faculty meetings, and special events as required.
41. Maintains confidentiality of information.
42. Reports to work on time every day.
43. Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledge of first aid skill and safe medication administration

  • Strong communication, organizational, public relations and interpersonal skills

  • Physically able to fulfill all performance requirements of the position, (i.e., lifting, squatting, bending, and standing for long periods of time)
  • Valid Texas Drivers License with a driving record that meets the requirements of the District
