Job description

The Oncology service at The AMC is currently seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician to help fulfill our Cancer Institute's mission. Our Oncology technicians work closely with our veterinarians to treat patients diagnosed with cancer, which includes performing routine blood tests, advanced imaging for staging, and administering chemotherapy. Our technicians provide care and support to patients and their families as part of the Oncology health care team. Oncology Technicians participate in research projects and cutting-edge clinical trials.

The primary function of the Oncology Service is to treat cancer in pets with a goal of curing their disease. We also provide palliative treatment and end of life care. The most common tumors treated at AMC are: lymphoma, mast cell tumors, feline injection site sarcomas, osteosarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and mammary gland tumors, but any pet with any type of cancer can be cared for by the Oncology Service.

The Oncologists at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in recognition of their training and knowledge in caring for pets with cancer. They regularly participate in teaching rounds at AMC and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to hone their cutting-edge skills and further their objective of providing the best quality of life for pets suffering from cancer.

Our hospital is currently in the midst of a 37,000 SF expansion and renovation to launch an expanded, modernized, state-of-the-art teaching hospital that will pave the way for a fulfilling professional experience. Our state-of-the-art Cancer Institute was opened in 2015.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional and compassionate patient care for patients on the Oncology service
  • Assist veterinarians with procedures, patient care and scheduling procedures
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with both clients and referral veterinarians to provide outstanding service
  • Record patients' medical histories and inquire about symptoms
  • Educate clients and provide advice and support to patients' families
  • Become proficient on the topic of chemotherapy safety
  • Provide instruction for trainees rotating through the oncology service
  • Perform duties in accordance with LVT New York licensure
  • Perform venipuncture and peripheral catheter placement
  • Assist with diagnostic tests and analyze results
  • Prepare, handle, and administer chemotherapy agents and medications
  • Become proficient at using a special closed system, drug transfer device that is designed to protect the person handling chemotherapy drugs
  • Monitor and administer sedation and anesthesia for medical procedures
  • Provide back-up for and cross-train in other departments as required, including Radiation Therapy, transfusion medicine, and diagnostic imaging
  • Operate and maintain medical equipment
  • Stock the oncology section and order supplies
  • Attend and participate in scheduled patient rounds

Qualifications

  • Must have a New York State Veterinary Technician license
  • Minimum of 2 years LVT experience
  • Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Excellent technical skills, particularly including venipuncture and anesthesia
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships
  • Communicate clearly with clients, technicians, and vets

Salary Range

$30.00 – $40.00 per hour
