The Licensed School Nurse (LSN) is responsible for the management of the school-based health program. The LSN will collaborate with all school staff in maintaining a high level of wellness in the entire school population. The LSN will facilitate the district's compliance with mandatory responsibilities related to health.
Responsibilities
Network Health Policies and Procedures (~30%):
- Develop network-wide policies and procedures for health-related issues, including COVID-19 safety planning and infection control management/planning, medication management and tracking, student health form completion and management, emergency procedures, day to day first aid needs, and staff education and support for medical issues [i.e asthma, allergies, lice, and seizure disorders]
- Create and maintain a 'School Health Systems Manual' that will clearly lay out policies and be accessible to staff and teachers
- Collaborate with Operations Teams to implement the use of standardized forms and practices as set forth in the School Health Systems Manual
- Communicate policies to other key stakeholders and follow up with staff to ensure strong implementation
- Develop and implement a system for storing and cataloging health records and releases of information
- Develop and communicate individual health plans for students with specific or complex medical needs
- Provide consultation to staff for development of and implementation of 504 Plans when a medical condition is involved
- Communicate with staff, families, and students about procedures at school to ensure the well-being of all students with health plans
- Conduct medical and health record reviews and screenings required for special education evaluations
- In collaboration with the operations teams and the Sight & Hearing Association, coordinate annual vision and hearing screenings for all students and lead the creation and implementation of a system for communication with families if their child does not pass either screening
- Complete all required state reporting related to health practices, primarily immunization records by Dec 1st of every year, and other reportable illnesses should they arise including positive COVID-19 cases in the school community
- Train and provide ongoing coaching and delegation to Operations Team members at the campus level on how to use electronic systems to document health related information and tasks
- Lead development and hiring of temporary health support staff positions whether through agencies or hired directly by Hiawatha Academies and provide training and supervision for any health support personnel hired
- Develop training and education materials and communicate to staff on health related topics including, but not limited to: CPR/First Aid, emergency procedures, blood-borne pathogens, health conditions that could lead to emergencies, students with health plans/Medical 504 plans, and medication administration
- Create and maintain a system for cataloging education materials for easy retrieval and use by staff and important stakeholders
- Collaborate with Operations Teams and Food Service staff members to strengthen food service practices related to food-based allergies
- Support staff, either in person or virtually, with urgent medical issues (911 should be called first in any medical emergencies)
- Be available to attend individual campus events such as 'Back to School' nights, health fairs, etc.
- Assist Operations Teams to coordinate annual flu shot clinics at individual campuses in the fall of each school year
- Identify and attend trainings to maintain professional competence
- Be a member of the Network Support Team and network operations sub-team to think strategically about the network-wide vision for both programming and operations
- Support with the execution of network initiatives, such as network days
- Attend monthly NST meetings
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minnesota School Nurse License or meets qualifications to obtain license through MDE
- Registered Nurse in Minnesota
- Must be certified in CPR

- This role would be a part of the Network Support Team
- The workday for most Network Support Team members is from 7:15 am-4:30 pm, with some flexibility according to role and circumstance
- Regular weekly presence at all Hiawatha campuses (currently 3 Minneapolis schools) will be required; must provide own transportation
