SUMMARY:

Perform those functions delegated and assigned by the registered nurse as appropriate. In situations where registered nurses are not employed/present, the Licensed Practical nurse functions under the direction of a duly licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, or other licensed health care providers authorized by law to prescribe. Assist physicians/providers/care team as needed..

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently applies the Brown Medicine values of patient care priority, dignity, collaboration, integrity and quality in support of the Brown Medicine mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient care, research excellence and outstanding physician education. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the Brown Medicine Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

  • Assist the registered nurse, nurse practitioner and physician to provide care for patients with gastroenterology disorders; acts as an advocate in the coordination of patient care.
  • Deliver direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process in both face-to-face and telephone encounters.
  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of patient care including hospitalization, outpatient visits, procedures, tests and treatments. Work with the care team to complete prior authorization for various tests and treatments.
  • Coordinate quality control activities as well as research activities conducted by providers within the clinic.
  • Coordinate specialty medications (Infusion schedules and Specialty Medications prior authorizations)
  • Manage state supplied vaccine program
  • Assist with staff education
  • Demonstrate performance, understanding, and interpretation of diagnostic measures such as lab tests, radiology exams, EKGs, etc.
  • Assist with intake and in preparing patients for procedures.
  • Perform technical and specialized skills during procedures.
  • Prepare rooms, equipment and supplies to accommodate the patient load.
  • Assist physician with procedures.
  • Monitor patient before, during and after procedure. Applies appropriate monitoring equipment.
  • Administer medications as directed by the RN, APP or physician under the guidelines of the Rhode Island State Board of Nursing.
  • Provide patient education.
  • Document on all forms as required.
  • Delegate to unlicensed assistive personnel, as appropriate.
  • Utilize supplies, equipment and resources to contains costs without compromising delivery of care.
  • Implements infection prevention measures and environmental safety.
  • Safety practices as demonstrated through room preparation and high-level disinfection practices.
  • Report and documents information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicates a positive and caring attitude towards patient, physicians, staff, and all other contacts
  • Seek guidance, direction and assistance where needed. Follow policies and procedures at all times and is an active participant in the QI program.
  • Maintain confidentiality/privacy/security of all patients and BMEC’s communications/documents.
  • Gain knowledge of all equipment and supplies and is familiar with their location, especially emergency rugs, supplies and equipment. Participate in staff meetings, and In-services (mandatory and regular).
  • Demonstrate flexibility in patient care, assignment, schedule and needs of BMEC.
  • Supervise employees with lesser qualifications and delegates duties to them according to qualifications, skills, education and competency
  • Maintain a clean, pleasant and safe environment for self/other employees and patients/visitors.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Participate on committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to other BMEC practices to meet operational/patient care needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to maintain open and positive communication with other health professionals, patients and families.
  • Exhibit professionalism always.
  • Adhere to HIPAA to maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel information.
  • Good command of the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Strong clinical skills specific to the endoscopy environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of Professional School of Nursing; LPN.
  • State Licensure as an LPN with previous experience in GI/endoscopy preferred.
  • Current certification in BLS.
  • Evidence of continuing education.
