Assist in screening, program planning, education, documentation and delivery of related therapy services consistent with physical therapy goals contained in student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) to identified special education students under the supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies, procedures, and regulations.
Essential Functions
- Comply with federal and state laws and district policies and procedures in the delivery of direct services to students to include specific areas of student assessment and direct therapeutic handling and positioning to maximize independent functioning.
- Consult with all levels of district personnel from a variety of departments such as classroom staff, transportation staff, food services staff and maintenance staff regarding the needs of individual students.
- Consult with parents regarding the needs of their child.
- Document services provided in student files in a timely manner.
- Represent Licensed Physical Therapist in Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings, as needed.
- Monitor the status of equipment and materials and notify occupational therapist regarding need for repair, modifications or replacement.
- Assist in the management of the occupational/physical therapy equipment inventory.
- Distribute and set up equipment in classrooms throughout the district.
- Contact community agencies regarding the needs of individual students.
- Assist in the purchase of adaptive equipment for individual students through the use of third-party reimbursement including Medicaid.
- Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
- Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Valid Physical Therapy Assistant License from the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. Certification in or the ability to be certified in cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Heimlich maneuver. One (1) year experience as a Licensed Physical therapy assistant preferred; prior experience in a public school setting or pediatric setting preferred; bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Texas/New Mexico driver's license; must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with disabilities. Subject to the district's drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation.
