POSITION TITLE: Licensed Building Substitute Teacher
POSITION STATUS: Exempt
CORE SCHEDULE: Monday Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.
DUTY DAYS: 187 per full school year
POSITION PURPOSE
The Licensed Building Substitute Teacher will work in both a transition setting with students on the Autism Spectrum ages 18-21 as a substitute for licensed special education staff and for educational assistants (Job Coaches). The individual will need to be flexible to a varying schedule, focused on meeting the needs of the students in the program each day. A Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. They are also responsible for providing support with instruction in the absence of a job coach. Must be willing to work in Tier 1, 2 & 3 within the AIM program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Teaching - Covering for daily absences of regular teachers:
  • Assume all duties of the regular classroom teacher promptly and in accordance with school rules. This may include driving/riding in school vans, lunchroom, hall duty, off campus learning environments or other duties assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Work with students to help reinforce learning objectives.
  • Work with other staff members in implementing accommodations and modifications.
  • Check to ensure that there are sufficient supplies in the classroom to carry out lesson plans.
  • Maintain regular classroom routines and discipline procedures.
  • Spend the entire assignment working with and for the students.
  • Serve as 1:1 for students following individualized plan
  • Serve as classroom assistant following guidance under classroom teacher
  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management by providing an inviting, exciting, innovative, and challenging learning environment according to plans prepared by the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships and use appropriate verbal, nonverbal and written communication with all individuals.
  • Involve families in the education process in collaboration with regular classroom teacher, as appropriate.
  • Use appropriate judgment to act in the best interest of students at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality of private and sensitive information and documents.
  • Participate in professional growth activities including conferences, workshops, coursework, trainings, committees, etc.
  • Attend department meetings.
  • Work with students offsite in non-educational work and community settings and assist the student in performing the work responsibilities in such a way that fosters independence.
  • Transporting students in school vehicles, often navigating unfamiliar routes.
  • Regular, prompt attendance.
  • Adhere to all Lionsgate Academy policies and procedures.

Teaching - Covering for extended absences of licensed teachers; covers all essential functions listed above - AND
  • Plan and teach original lessons based on course outlines
  • Plan and conduct assessments appropriate to the content
  • Provide written feedback to case managers and others regarding student progress
  • Attend IEP meetings as requested.

Job Coach - Under the direction of a licensed staff member
  • Assist students in in areas of daily living
  • Support students onsite and in the community

Member of the Crisis Team when not directly subbing as follows:
  • Respond to daily behavior, crisis and health emergency calls for students in Tier 1, 2 or 3.
  • Assist students in de-escalation following an incident
  • Assist with student debriefing of critical situations

Due Process; may work on Due Process tasks when not teaching, subbing or Job Coaching as follows:
  • Develop and maintain the SPED master caseload spreadsheet
  • Utilize the spreadsheet to regularly inform IEP managers of current status of IEP Meeting Schedule (timelines)
  • Maintain master due process tracking document
  • Assist with monitoring file contents for appropriate content. Ensure inclusion of all due process documents. Maintain them in chronological order.
  • Monitor checkout procedure; maintain log of access
  • Prepare files for transition/matriculation to another program or building within the district.
  • Third Party Billing -Work under the direction of district-wide special education assistant

OTHER POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, mean, mode and median ability to draw and interpret bar graphs, ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession, or meets qualification, of a valid Minnesota Teaching License or Short Call Substitute license.
  • Ability to operate a computer and the software necessary to complete required job tasks.
  • Valid drivers license/ability to transport students via school vehicle (must have 3 or less moving violations in the last three years and no DWI/DUI convictions within the past 5 years).
  • Exemplary attendance record is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in the instruction of middle and high school students with varied learning styles and levels of mastery
  • Preferred identified classroom experience & teaming experience with special education and regular education service teams.
  • Preferred experience, interest and/or expertise with students on the Autism spectrum
