Position Summary

Do you enjoy books? Is working with the public something you want to do? Can you envision yourself working in a hub of activity that serves the entire community? If so, you may want to consider working for the Churchill County Library in the part-time (14 hours/week), casual position of Library Page. The duties include assisting patrons, shelving books, reading the shelves, performing data entry and doing other related work. The position requires physical exertion to some degree, as you must be on your feet continuously during your shift. You also need to be able to lift and carry stacks of books, and reach up high and kneel down on the floor to shelve the books.

A skills test concerning the Dewey Decimal System may be required of those candidates selected for interview. This is a "casual" position, meaning this is an at-will position and there are no retirement, health or other benefits. This is a year-round job, and we are looking for people who are committed to working the schedules outlined below throughout the year.
The successful candidate will be required to rotate between the following two shift schedules:
Schedule1
Monday – 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with a half-hour lunch
Tuesday, Wednesday – 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Schedule 2
Thursday - Friday – 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Saturday – 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a half-hour lunch

Following is the job description.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the professional library staff, performs basic, non-technical, non-professional duties.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This class is the basic support level in the Library series, competent to perform the basic range of library support duties as assigned. This class is distinguished from Library Assistant in that the latter performs a greater variety of library support duties with more independence and discretionary judgment.

Essential Functions

This job description indicates, in general, the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, abilities and other essential functions (as covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act) expected of the incumbent.   • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Collects, sorts, and processes materials; shelves materials, publications and other items in proper sequence.
  • Assists patrons in locating library materials; assists patrons with the basic operation of office and computer/mobile equipment, including email, Internet, library catalogue, databases, and common software programs.
  • Assists with collection maintenance, including, but not limited to, shifting, weeding, sorting and adjusting shelves to accommodate materials.
  • Provides customer service, either directly or by referral to appropriate staff.
  • Assists with programs, events, and other functions.
  • Assists in decorating or creating displays

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience
Completion of the tenth grade; keyboarding experience.
Previous library experience is a plus.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
  • The Dewey Decimal System.
  • Principles and practices of public library operations and services.
  • Business arithmetic.
  • Computer applications related to the work, including internet familiarity.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals, in person and over the telephone.
Skill in:
  • Following oral and written directions
  • Reading simple decimals.
  • Shelving materials accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Making accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or Library goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Promoting good customer service.
  • Reading and explaining rules, policies and procedures.
  • Dealing successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone.
Required Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
  • Nevada Driver's License.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Frequent standing. Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, squatting, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate over the telephone and in person.
Conditions of Employment

  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Benefits for casual employees are limited to social security and Medicare contributions. Employees are required to pay their portion of the social security and Medicare contributions.
