Job description

General Description:

Responsible for the upkeep, cleaning, and maintenance of the library building, adjacent walks and grounds, and equipment. Responds to emergency situations involving power failures, plumbing and heating issues, vandalism, burglar alarms, and snow removal of the library stairs and walkway to the door.

Primary Essential Functions:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

Receives oral and written instructions from the Director and Assistant Director; performs work according to standard procedure and by building’s operational schedule. Regularly reports work accomplished to Director or Assistant Director.

Cleans and sanitizes all rooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, kitchen, stairways, and windows. Uses brooms, mops, and floor equipment to clean and maintain flooring. Uses vacuum cleaners to clean rugs, carpets, blinds, and curtains. Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills. Replenishes restroom supplies. Empties all wastebaskets and recycling bins, puts out the cans at the proper time for pickup, and brings back in the cans soon after. Replaces light bulbs. Checks building at beginning and end of shift to look for any issues.

Clears snow from walkways, stairs, and entrances whenever is needed - especially during open library hours, but also outside of open library hours. Salts and sands as necessary.

Requests help from DPW as needed and when appropriate, but is responsible for making sure the following gets accomplished: Keeps gutters and downspouts clean and in good repair. Keeps lawns, walkways, stairways, and parking lot clear of debris and trash. Clears grass from walkways and parking lot. Keeps air conditioning cage free of weeds, grass, trees, etc.

Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings and programs. Prepares rooms and kitchen for use by library and other organizations.

Assists in shipping, receiving, delivery of things to other departments and post office, and setting up of library supplies, materials, furniture, and equipment.

Performs other related job duties as necessary.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required, must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge: Successful candidates will have working knowledge and experience in building cleaning and facility maintenance.

Abilities: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved oral and written instructions. Ability to work effectively with staff; supervise volunteers; manage multiple detailed tasks and priorities. Ability to organize time, work independently, and accomplish tasks based on priority.

Skills: Organizational skills and great attention to detail, ability to problem solve, basic knowledge of and ability in using email, the Internet, and word processing applications.

Work Environment

The majority of work is performed in an office setting typical to a Library, as well as outside.

Physical, Motor, and Visual Skills

Physical Skills: The work principally involves cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining the library building, therefore is physical in nature. At times, this will include climbing on ladders, lifting and carrying objects up to 75 pounds, and using tools. Also may require to occasionally work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.

Motor Skills: Duties require physical ability to climb a ladder, change a lightbulb, build office furniture, and order supplies.

Visual Skills: Visual demands require reading documents and instructions for general understanding and viewing a computer monitor.
