The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a responsible and detailed individual to join the staff as a Library Clerk I. The position includes working with patrons in a busy and diverse public library and may be assigned to the Youth Services, Adult Services, or Circulation Department. Some evening and Saturday hours are required.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

When assigned to Youth Services include the following:

  • Staffs the Youth Services desk and assists library patrons of all ages in finding library materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs

  • Assists patrons of all ages, including children and caregivers, in locating library materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs

  • Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to customers

  • Provides technology instruction to customers and troubleshoots in the use of internet, computers, printers, copiers, tablets, and e-book readers

  • Supports librarians and youth staff in program preparation, such as craft prep or program setup/take down

  • Designs attractive, thematic book displays

  • Shelves youth materials and conducts shelf reading

  • Monitors play area and keeps youth department tidy

  • Monitors teen space

  • Upholds excellent customer service standards with enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism

  • Performs other tasks as required


When assigned to Adult Services:

  • Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to patrons

  • Provides technology instruction to patrons and troubleshoots in the use of internet, computers, printers, copiers, tablets, and e-book readers

  • Supports librarians and adult staff in program preparation, such as craft prep or program setup/take down

  • Shelves adult materials and conducts shelf reading

  • Monitors adult public area and keeps department tidy

  • Upholds excellent customer service standards with enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism

  • Registers new patrons and issues library cards

  • Answers telephones, refers queries to appropriate staff member as needed

  • Processes credit card payments for services using Converge

  • Interprets library and City policies and procedures for the public

  • Performs other tasks as required


When assigned to Circulation:

  • Charges and discharges library materials using an automated library system

  • Registers new patrons and issues library cards

  • Assists in controlling the status of materials

  • Renews cards by verifying information and clearing any existing blocks

  • Answers telephones, handles phone renewals, refers queries to appropriate staff member as needed

  • Collects monies for fines and fees and provides receipts as needed

  • Has access to safe to make change when needed (full time only)

  • Processes credit card payments for fines and fees using Converge

  • Interprets library and City policies and procedures for the public

  • Loads paper and toner in photocopiers and printers

  • Assists patrons with photocopiers

  • Assists patrons with self-registration and self-checkout as needed

  • Shelves Adult and Youth materials

  • Checks shelves for overdue materials

  • Participates in curbside delivery of materials

  • Responsible for overseeing set up of Circulation desk in preparation for opening –supplies stocked, bookdrops emptied, doors unlocked on time for opening

  • Participates in processing materials delivered by courier - including unpacking bags, checking in items, labeling holds, shelving on hold shelf; and setting up and labeling bags to send to other locations


ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school and some experience in general clerical work; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patrons.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, diagram, or schedule form.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Solid interpersonal skills, including tact, common courtesy, strong communication skills and conflict resolution skills required to work with individual citizens and other employees.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software, use of Internet, and ability to teach such subjects.

Additional Requirements

Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS)training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.

Knowledge of the procedures, practices and equipment of a public library

Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed policies and procedures

Ability to operate standard office machines, including computers

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Ability to prioritize tasks

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and employees

Ability to type accurately

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse customer base

Ability to count money accurately

Knowledge of filing, both numerically and alphabetically
