Job description

Performs responsible public service and administrative work as well as detailed manual and computerized clerical duties specific to a library: circulation of materials, data entry and retrieval, collection of statistics and fees, ordering and receipt of materials. Employee may work directly with the public, and may work with details of the technical aspects of the job. Explains library rules, regulations and established policies.
Works under the direction of a Librarian or designated supervisor.

Preference will be given to current Town of Greenwich employees who are members of GMEA.Education and Experience:

1. Graduation from high school or equivalent plus two (2) years work experience performing clerical duties such as data entry, customer service and/or office work utilizing computer programs, or

2. Education and experience equivalent to #1 above, however, all applicants must have 1 year experience performing clerical duties such as data entry, customer service and/or office work utilizing computer programs.
Qualifications:

Working knowledge of libraries and library operations.
Working knowledge of office operations and practices, and of business English, basic bookkeeping and business arithmetic.
Working knowledge of common pieces of electronic communication equipment, and the ability to operate and assist others in their use.
Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and general library procedures.
Skilled in the operation of a personal computer using basic word processing and/or spreadsheet or database applications.
Ability to assist part time staff in the use of media and electronic equipment, reference works and print and electronic indexes.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library staff and all library patrons and to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with superiors, peers and other employees.
Ability to make minor decisions using good judgment in accordance with laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
Ability to read, write and converse fluently in English in order to assist patrons.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including pushing and pulling loads weighing up to 300 lbs.
Ability to prioritize work and complete tasks with speed, accuracy and attention to detail.

The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. This type of examination requires that you completely fill out the application, adding pages for additional relevant information where needed, and attaching any documentation of certificates, degrees, other significant documents, etc. A candidate's eligibility to be interviewed will be based solely on material submitted at the time of application. Once the Eligibility List is prepared no further information may be submitted and no adjustments will be made.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists the public and addresses routine complaints according to departmental policies and procedures. Works at a public service desk for extended periods of time. May oversee part-time shelvers, processors, pages or aides as required.
Assists in the circulation of all types of library materials including providing library materials to patrons in nursing and senior living facilities.
Responsible for maintaining the computerized library automation system data, including book circulation, data entry and processing new books. Administers overdue notices, repairs books, discards materials and assists with book fairs, health fairs, and book van.
Maintains inventory, service records and statistics of use as required. Conducts media inventory and manages library supplies.
May handle daily cash and balance receipts for Circulation Desk.
Processes records and materials for orders, requests, interlibrary loans, bindery, discards and overdue circulation transactions. Prepares purchase orders and related correspondence.
Responsible for data entry.
Routinely performs such physically demanding tasks as lifting and unloading heavy book bags, pushing book trucks, bending low and reaching high to shelve and standing at a public service desk for up to four hours at a time.
Responsible for distribution of mail and the delivery of other library materials. Receives and processes materials. Retrieves and packs material. Checks all materials for damage and does claiming.
Installs circulation system terminals and printers. Checks for hardware malfunctions when problems occur. Works directly with maintenance vendors as required; troubleshoots product problems and special orders with vendors as needed.
Operates electronic communication equipment - audiovisual, computer, multimedia used in the library producing and presenting information in audio and visual formats. Plans and produces video and computer projects using media tools and electronic communication equipment.
May prepare weekly staff schedules.
Assists LTAs and Librarians in producing flyers and forms and provides general clerical support as needed.
Moves, sets up and operates electronic equipment for auditorium productions and other events. May give instruction to part time staff and student interns in the use of library equipment.
May answer simple reference and directional questions and performs readers' advisory work at branches.
Performs related work as required.

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.
All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.
The Town of Greenwich has implemented a policy of background investigations all full and part time positions prior to hiring as part of the reference checking procedures for outside candidates. The investigation will only be conducted as the last step prior to an offer. Refusal to sign the release form will terminate the candidate's further consideration.
