Library Assistant – Job Description

Positions Directly Supervised: None
Primary Responsibilities:

• Carries out opening and closing procedures;
• Sorts, organizes and shelves library materials;
• Provides respectful customer service according to Library values and standards;
• Assists customers with directional questions and with using the copier, public computers, and other equipment as needed;
• Monitors and assists customers in the use of the Internet and other computer software;
• Uses the library’s automated system to check materials in/out, process holds, register new cardholders, collect fines/fees, and answer inquiries;
• Assists customers in the use of library materials and services, including reference and readers’ advisory services in person, by phone and electronic media;
• Assists in keeping the library neat and orderly;
• Other duties as assigned. This job description does not necessarily reflect all aspects of the job function.

Secondary Responsibilities:

• May perform duties in processing and preparing library materials for the collection;
• May perform duties in upkeep and repair of library materials;
• May perform activities related to the retrieval of overdue materials;
• May assist with library programs.

• Ability to use the library’s automated circulation system and online catalog;
• Good interpersonal and communication skills, in person, by phone and through electronic media;
• Knowledge of and commitment to excellent customer service;
• Able to maintain composure while handling customer complaints;
• Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively with customers and staff to achieve results;
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to quickly and accurately sort by alphabetical, numerical, chronological, or Dewey Decimal order;
• Ability to accurately make change and use a cash register;
• Ability to operate a telephone, fax machine, typewriter, copier, printer, and other office equipment;
• Flexible, adaptable, and able to flourish in a changing environment;
• Dependable, motivated self-starter able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
• A background check and drug test are required.

Physical Demands:
Individuals may need to stand for extended periods. Manual dexterity to manipulate library materials required. May work extensive hours at the computer screen. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to retrieve or store materials throughout the workday. Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy. Employees may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 30 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required. Push and pull fully loaded (50-100 pounds) book trucks.
Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma, GED are preferred. Working towards a high school diploma may be considered. Must be at least 18. Some work history is preferred.
Status: This is a part-time position working 20 hours a week and requires working scheduled shifts that may include daytime, evening and weekend hours.
