Responsibilities

The Librarian/Media Specialist manages the in-school library education program and is responsible for teaching and planning one-hour library and/or reading education classes a week. They will be responsible for managing the library book collection along with all school technology. Successful candidates will have a demonstrable track record of working effectively with youth of color in low-income communities, strong classroom management skills, experience in library science and media, and passion for food, social and environmental justice. The best candidate will have a true love for working with young children. You get to build the library in a brand-new building!


Responsibilities include the following:


Program Delivery

  • Plan lessons and curriculum for library elective classes for children in grades PK3-4.
  • Develop, organize and coordinate at least three school-wide library activities per academic year
  • Plans, organizes, and implements annual events such as the book fair and character day

Library and Technology Maintenance

  • Oversee technology maintenance, library collection organization
  • Organize, track and store desktops, Chromebooks and technology equipment (LCD projectors, visualizers
  • Maintain the circulation system for all library materials, including check-out card maintenance and an accurate system of overdue notices, and the library’s cataloging system
  • Organizes and maintains periodical subscriptions

Coordination & Relationship Building

  • Schedule library class schedules with the school principal
  • Collaborate with teachers to create dynamic curriculum that suits different age groups
  • Meet with the Family Teacher Association t o provide program and organizational updates
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with local public librarians and community service professionals (e.g., police officers, firemen, etc.) who provide occasional services to the library

Supervision

  • Supervise parent and student volunteers and interns who assist you in teaching classes and with library maintenance
  • Train, monitor, and schedule library volunteers

Communication & Administration

  • Keep accurate attendance records and evaluations of classes and curriculum taught and share results with teachers
  • Issue correspondence related to the school library, including thank you notes for donated items, newsletter items and volunteer services
  • Create a monthly newsletter to be distributed to the school and local communities

Required Skills and Experience

A successful candidate will have:

  • Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with mission and vision of school.
  • Be proficient in basic office computer skills, including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs.
  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, Master's degree or the equivalent in Library Studies preferred
  • Minimum of one-year teaching or library experience with preschool and elementary-aged children.
  • Familiarity with theories of environmental, restorative and social justice.
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to communicate effectively with teachers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build meaningful relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Openness to feedback, desire to continue development as a professional, and willingness to take responsibility for scholar outcomes and achievement.

Compensation and Benefits

Lee Montessori PCS offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package. Salary offered is commensurate with experience.
