Job description

Job Summary:
You are responsible for creating a Young Adult department within the GCL (Germantown Community Library) with responsibilities including working with the Germantown school district, creating programs geared towards teens, hosting information literacy classes and working closely with the Reference department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Creates excellent customer experiences by providing an inviting atmosphere for library users, making library users feel welcome, and providing positive and memorable library experiences.
  • Maintains good internal communications and strong working relationships with colleagues and supervisors regarding building, staff, service, and security issues.
  • Under the direction of the Library Director, supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and/or outreach events for teens to achieve library objectives.
  • Promotes and educates community members about library services and collections through outreach programs and/or events to the community to schools, businesses, and other community organizations.
  • Reach out to area schools to arrange library instruction sessions at schools and/or main library to promote print and computer literacy for teens.
  • Visit schools, community organization and meetings promoting Germantown Community Library services, collections, and programs.
  • Provides prompt, courteous assistance to library users via face-to-face, service desks, telephone, virtual, and/or electronic service options.
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory for library users.
  • Keeps abreast of new materials, demonstrates a knowledge and appreciation of library materials, and encourages the use of materials and services through book talks, displays, reading lists, posters, social media posts, and other promotional tools.
  • Answers basic computer and e-reader questions.
  • Supports and upholds library policies and the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Assists with overseeing the processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections, including shelf-reading, shelving, weeding, and other collection management tasks.
  • Explains or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files, print and media collections, databases, the Internet, etc.
  • Works with culturally diverse populations.
  • Supports the day-to-day operation and is cross trained in other departments. Be available to work reference/information desk as needed in coordination with head of reference.
  • Uses the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, and may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, or hardware.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Attends workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as needed.
  • Performs work of all lower-level library classifications and other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • College degree in Library Science or closely related field; MLS or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years of progressively responsible library experience and/or administrative functions of a library, or equivalent knowledge.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and previous use of library databases and services including materials selection tools.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Good organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both professional and nonprofessional, co-workers, management personnel, and the public.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and presentation abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand sensitive relationships and underlying politics in client interactions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekend and evening work.

Work Environment:
Fast paced public library. Self-starter with ability to work in a self-directed environment with minimal guidance.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other material.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
