DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Public Library (HPL) seeks an energetic, flexible, self-motivated, and team-oriented person who has a passion for technology to work as Discovery Services Librarian (Librarian II). Under the direction of the Librarian III Digitization, the Discovery Services Librarian will provide leadership and training to build an integrated framework for library systems such as discovery solutions, HPL's integrated library system (ILS), and link resolvers to improve user experience and provide a more seamless experience.
Essential job duties for the Discovery Services LibrarianII include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining and evolving discovery layers and ILS
  • Researching and suggesting improvements and upgrades that enhance library resource and services discovery.
  • Researching and troubleshooting discovery and issues reported by library staff and patrons.
  • Configuring policies, practices, and technologies (e.g., patron access and new service integrations).
  • Planning and coordinating projects for various solutions such as mobile app., analytics and other related products.
  • Preparing and presenting reports on discovery layer usage and library catalog usage
  • Supporting and enhancing the ILS, including testing, training staff and improving user interfaces.
  • Works closely with Division Manager, Systems Librarian, Library Material Services, Customer Experience, and Digital Strategies on Discovery and ILS related projects.
  • Plans ongoing development, user testing, thoughtful increase of integration points, and analysis of Library's discovery systems in a methodical, organized, and phased approach.
  • Provides communication to staff on use and enhanced functionality of discovery systems.
  • Provides support for Special Projects, including ad hoc metadata creation for legacy HPL Digital Archival collections.

HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one (1) year of experience as a librarian.
OR
Requires a Bachelor's degree plus 18 hours toward a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two (2) years of professional library experience. A Master's of Library Science degree must be completed within two (2) years from being hired into this classification.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
  • Experience using EBSCO Discovery Service or other discovery layers
  • Experience using ILS systems, such as Polaris, SirsiDynix Symphony, or Sierra
  • Previous cataloging experience and familiarity with current metadata standards and practices, including XML and Dublin Core;
  • Experience supporting library specific software (e.g., MARCEdit, Open Athens, label printers)
  • Experience with delivering services via mobile devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones) such as barcode scanning, library app. enhancements / troubleshooting.
  • Experience with webpage editing using web-based tools.
