Job description

This classification performs a broad range of professional library duties associated with a full-service library system.

GLAC is comprised of the Central Library, Brand Library & Art Center and six unique neighborhood branches. Known as the "Jewel City," Glendale is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County. With a population of more than 200,000, Glendale is a thriving cosmopolitan city that is rich in history, culturally diverse, and home to a vibrant network of businesses and community organizations.
There are currently two Librarian/Children's Services vacancies. One of the positions will be focused on launching and maintaining mobile Glendale Library, Arts and Culture services using a newly acquired electric outreach vehicle. This position will also be assigned to work at both the Library Connection @ Adams Square and Pacific Park Branch Library with a focus on children's services. The second position will primarily work as a Children's Librarian in the newly renovated Children's Space and conduct community engagement efforts. Position assignments are subject to change based on department necessity.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and highest ethical standards.
Possesses a depth of knowledge in providing children's services in a public library setting.
Works with a diverse community and staff, valuing inclusion, diversity, equity and antiracism and applies those values to library programs and services.
Assists patrons of all ages and backgrounds in every aspect of utilizing the library.
Implements library outreach vehicle operations, policies, and procedures. Regularly drives outreach vehicle as needed.
Plans, implements, and evaluates mobile outreach services including assessing related community needs, scheduling site visits, planning and presenting programs, developing and maintaining collections and, performing circulation functions.
Plans and implements library services and programs for children (ages 0-12) and their families including those with diverse backgrounds, abilities and needs.
Plans and implements a wide variety of in person and virtual programs and events including, but not limited to, story-times, author talks, films, arts and crafts, maker and IT workshops, gallery exhibitions, trainings and other activities.
Effectively plans, delivers and evaluates culturally relevant library programs for children and their families.
Represents the library in public forums including providing school visits, classroom talks, orientation sessions, library tours, outreach visits and community events.
Adopts a community engagement mindset and develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and non-profits that serve families in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet the needs of the local community.
Ensure the library's collections include relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of children, parents, caregivers and educators in the community.
Instructs children and caregivers in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
Coordinates, implements, and/or oversees library projects or programs on both a systemwide or branch level.
Provides and responds to in-depth readers' advisory, informational, research and reference service questions, tailoring the assistance to the patrons' needs.
Participates in data-driven collection maintenance activities, including selection, deselection, floating and merchandising.
Assists with the library collections arrangement, organization and presentation.
Assists the public in accessing information and library resources.
Assists patrons with circulation functions and financial transactions.
Monitors cash funds, receives monies, makes out receipts, reconciles and balances accounts or statements, and performs mathematic computations with a calculator, personal computer or manually.
Assists with library event programming and other services; assists with rentals and the set-up of auditorium and meeting rooms for special events.
Assists with facility maintenance functions, including creating and tracking Facility Service Requests (FSR's) as assigned.
Orders, receives, and invoices library materials.
Provides technology instruction and troubleshooting assistance on a variety of technology devices, tools and software.
Initiates inter library loans, conducts online material and information searches, produces subject bibliographies and reading lists, selects and maintains library materials.
Maintains currency of professional knowledge by attending professional meetings and staff conferences. Keeps abreast on trends in publishing, automation and public library practices.
Participates in staff meetings and system-oriented planning sessions.
Maintains records and statistics, as well as prepares associated reports.
Tracks inventory of office supplies as assigned. Completes forms for ordering materials or supplies and follows up on delivery of ordered materials.
Directs clerical and part-time staff when the unit supervisor is absent.
Regularly drives on City business as the needs of the position requires. May need to use own vehicle to travel between City locations.
Expends and monitors budgets for assigned areas.
Provides input on the modification or library procedures, work processes, and services.
Assists in long range planning based on knowledge of community need.
Utilizes the Internet and social media to publicize library services.
Acts as lead library staff or "Person in Charge" as needed. May oversee security as "Person in Charge" to ensure safety of library patrons and other staff members. May exercise lead supervision over lower level staff and may directly supervise assigned subordinate staff. May schedule, train, coordinate, and review work of assigned staff. May assist with hiring and evaluating staff.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.Experience
One year of progressively responsible experience in a library setting or a related field. Experience in a public library setting is preferred.
Experience in children's services within a library is highly desirable.
Bilingual skills in Armenian, Spanish and/or Korean are highly desirable.
Education
Master's of Library Science degree from an accredited college or university. Current students who lack eight semester units or twelve quarter units of the educational requirement for a Master's Degree may also apply. Successful candidates must meet the full educational requirement within six months of employment (by the end of the probationary period).
Master's of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university is highly desirable.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver's license.
