Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:
Howard University Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative colleague to join us as the librarian for the Howard University Business School and the Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRC) program and lead librarian for patent and trademark information services. The incumbent will also serve as the University Libraries’ representative to the USPTO’s Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRC) program and lead librarian for patent and trademark information services.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for supervising and training staff and student workers and assigning and reviewing their work.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, students and staff of the department and University.
External contacts including, but not limited to visitors, vendors and the general public.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Design and teach instruction sessions and offer individual research consultations that have a measurable impact on student learning and information literacy skills.
  • Develops and fosters meaningful relationships with assigned academic departments, developing an understanding of the scholarly needs of their faculty and students. Participate in campus and department events that promote library resources and services.
  • Develops and maintains instruction materials (e.g., research guides, websites, tutorials, handouts, and exercises) using best practices for usability, accessibility, and outcome-based learning design.
  • Supports faculty research projects and assignment design; seek opportunities to offer integrated and high-impact information fluency instruction, including proposing and leading instruction beyond one-shot sessions.
  • Collaborates closely with colleagues across the Library Liaison Program to co-teach, offer effective referrals, and support our cross-department work. Through committee work and projects, shares knowledge of faculty and student needs in designing responsive library services.
  • Advises faculty and administrative staff in the use of the patent and trademark databases and cognate resources, software, and equipment.
  • Anticipates the need for and identifies resources to enhance the user’s ability for self-directed research, independent information gathering and critical evaluation.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with patent and trademark clients by providing assistance in the use of the patent and trademark database and cognate resources, software and equipment.
  • Organize and schedule workshops designed to promote understanding of and engagement with innovation and entrepreneurship projects and programs.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the Business Library/Patent & Trademark Center’s web page as an instructional tool and a gateway to local and global resources.
  • Develops professional development opportunities designed to promote understanding of and engagement with innovation and entrepreneurship projects and programs.
  • Develops and maintain the physical and virtual collections needed by assigned departments. Assess collection gaps and any budget needs. Identify and/or evaluate gift collections. Participates in the review of licenses for digital resources.
  • Maintains statistics and prepare reports in areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in professional and scholarly activities, including attending conferences, reading and/or contributing to the literature, and serving on committees.
  • Contributes to the cultural and outreach programs presented by the assigned departments and affiliated agencies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of patent concepts and resources and the USPTO's Patent and Trademark Resource Center.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • ALA accredited MLS or comparable master’s degree, and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research setting.
  • 2 years’ experience providing subject liaison services (instruction, consultation, and/or collection development) in an academic library or other public service environment.
