Job description

Responsible for professional library services including but not limited to, reference, readers advisory, programs, and selection of library materials to meet the needs of library customers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES

  • Identify customer needs though phone, electronic and face-to-face support; assist by providing reader's advisory services, reference, library technology, library policies, and directional assistance.
  • Plan and coordinate programs and services.
  • Promote library services to the community through education and outreach.
  • Evaluate and select materials for an assigned area of the collection.
  • Plan, present and arrange publicity for programs both in the library and in the community.
  • Provide instruction on the use of library resources, as needed.
  • Supervise adult volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and activities, as appropriate.
  • Conduct orientation tours and community outreach activities for individuals and/or groups.
  • Provide expertise and recommendations to establish and updates policies and procedures.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives and help facilitate departmental projects and goals.
  • Assist with collection development and collection maintenance, including but not limited to, evaluation, selection, and weeding of assigned library collection areas.
  • Assist with managing branch room reservations.
  • Record statistical information, as needed.
  • Participate in internal and external community activities and committees, as directed.
  • Serve as a back-up to Branch Management in their absence.
ADULT SERVICES
  • Complete and provide library programing and services with a focus on adults.
TEEN SERVICES
  • Complete and provide library programing and services with a focus on teens and young adults.
  • Develop cooperative programs and serve as liaison between the public library and the schools, community organizations and community groups dedicated to serving teens and young adults.
YOUTH SERVICES
  • Complete and provide library programing and services with a focus on preschoolers and elementary-age children.
  • Present weekly story times and other literature-based programs for children and their caregivers.
  • Develop cooperative programs and serve as liaison between the public library and the schools, community organizations and community groups dedicated to serving children.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Master's Degree from an ALA accredited college or university in Library Science, Information Science, Information Studies, or related field,

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check and social security number verification.
SAFETY
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): No.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; moderate squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting, including stooping below knee level and reaching above shoulder level.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Hearing and Vision: Prolonged listening and viewing information to identify requested items.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 20 pounds and carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Environment: Works in an office and library setting; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work rotating schedule including nights and weekends. Must be able to work after normal business hours, as needed.
