Position Summary
Performs professional work in the various areas of library service. Executes basic and in-depth research and information inquiry assistance; assists public in selecting and locating library materials and electronic resources. Promotes use of literary and information resources. Provides instruction and training. Contributes to the Collection Development team.
Essential Functions
  • Executes basic and in-depth research and information inquiry assistance for library users. Assists the public in selecting and locating library resources. Answers customer inquiries using print and electronic resources.
  • Instructs and advises users in person and by designing informational and instructional materials. Teaches search strategies and use of resource materials.
  • Provides technology instruction and troubleshooting assistance on a variety of technology devices, tools, and software.
  • Creates and performs outreach programs for the community. Participates in public relations activities by formally representing the library in the community.
  • Develops assigned areas of library materials collection. Evaluates and selects new materials based on established selection criteria and the needs of library customers. Evaluates library collections to determine materials retention and removal and identifies areas for growth to meet community needs.
  • Markets and promotes use of library services. Designs and prepares news releases, marketing materials, displays and social media posts. Conducts library tours. Creates bibliographies, book lists, and other reference aids.
  • Plans, coordinates, and delivers developmentally appropriate classes and events, that encourage reading, exploration, research, learning, and highlights the materials collection and electronic resources.
  • Contributes to the Library's website and social media content.
  • Interprets and applies City and Library directives, policies, and guidelines.
  • Monitors assigned budgets.
  • Maintains statistics and prepares reports.
  • Assists in maintaining the integrated library system.
  • Stays current on trends and best practices in library services through continuing education, professional journals, peer networks, professional conferences and committees.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Adult Services
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with community groups, agencies, businesses, and nonprofits in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet local needs and interests.
  • Assists with management of Interlibrary Loan services including verification, requests, processing, and tracking materials.
  • Provides assistance and instruction to patrons in the Digital Media Lab.

Position Qualifications
Education
  • Master's of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university required.

Experience
  • 1 year to 3 years experience in a related field required.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of library science principles and practice as related to collection development, readers advisory, reference and electronic services, programming, classification, and cataloging.
  • Knowledge of equipment and automation systems as related to library operations.
  • Knowledge of research methods, search and retrieval techniques, and skills to obtain requested information.
  • Knowledge of organization of library materials including Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and bibliographic utility.
  • Knowledge of standard literature, reference materials, and library resources and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human development and behavior.
  • Bilingual Librarian should have a thorough knowledge of and/or extensive experience with the Hispanic community, demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values and customs of the Hispanic community. They should have strong cultural sensitivity and ability to stay current on multicultural trends and events.
  • Bilingual Librarian and Youth Librarian should have knowledge and understanding of the theories of child and adolescent learning and development and how those theories might impact library service from birth to high school.

  • Ability to train and coordinate volunteers, peers, and co-workers.
  • Ability to analyze and perform and/or manage a variety of library projects from planning through implementation.
  • Ability to organize time effectively.

Skills:
  • Skill in the use of a variety of office software and equipment including Microsoft Office, Google Drive or similar file storage and sharing platform, email, the internet, copier, printer, scanner, and mobile devices.
  • Skill in troubleshooting computer and technology problems.
  • Skill in teaching individuals and groups.
  • Skill in planning and implementing programs, events, classes, and activities of varying complexity.
  • Skill in customer service methods and techniques.
  • Makerspace Librarian should possess some knowledge and skill in the use of common makerspace equipment and technology.

Work Hours
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and some split shifts as required.
  • Bilingual Librarians must be able to fluently read, write and speak Spanish and English.
  • Bilingual Librarians must be able to pass a pre-employment bilingual exam.
