Job Responsibilities

The South Carolina Human Affairs Commission is seeking a hardworking and dependable candidate just like you to apply! Responsibilities of the Legal Assistant:
Performs a variety of secretarial, clerical, entry level paraprofessional, and administrative duties relative to the processing and/or disposition of allegations of unlawful discrimination against state, local and municipal governments and the private sector under the State's anti-discrimination laws. The job duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provides administrative and paraprofessional support for all attorneys in the agency's legal division. Organizes litigation files and deadlines in pending lawsuits. Receives and processes verbal and written correspondence to effectuate orderly and efficient operation of the legal division. Drafts letters, forms, correspondence, and legal documents where appropriate. Proofreads the legal division's work product for accuracy. Prepares subpoenas and maintain recordkeeping of same.
  • Responds to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and, if appropriate, purge files in response to fulfilling the party's request. Prepares and monitors invoicing for FOIA requests.
  • Monitors and records activities conducted within the agency's legal division. Maintains log demonstrating all categories of activities reviewed and completed by the Legal Division. Supports agency's mediation and settlement efforts by monitoring successful mediations and resolutions of public accommodations cases.
  • Archives agency files in accordance with agency's current records retention schedules.
  • Performs other related duties as required. Neatly, thoroughly, and accurately complete assigned tasks according to established standards and quality.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and work experience in providing administrative support for an attomey(s), law office, or legal division. Familiarity with state court procedures, legal terminology, and the form of legal documents.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of principles, policies, and practices of office management, including secretarial, administrative, organization, and records management skills.
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals.
  • Ability to exhibit good judgment and sound reasoning in communications and in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and through writing with the public, agency legal counsel, other agency employees, and outside referral agencies.
  • Must have Familiarity with state court procedures, legal terminology and the form of legal documents.
  • Must be able to lift up to five (5) lbs with or without accommodations.
  • Position may require overnight travel.
  • Prior use of Microsoft Office 365.

Preferred Qualifications
Paralegal certificate or associate degree in paralegal studies preferred, but not required.
