The NSRL is a multidisciplinary team of researchers, innovators, and scientists who lead with science to make athletes* measurably better. We deliver validated insights and innovative capabilities to drive the future of Nike products and services. The NSRL Applied Apparel Research Team conducts research that provides insights leading to innovative apparel and measurable benefits. We apply scientific methods and research results to drive new concepts and platforms across multiple innovation teams.

Who we are looking for

We’re looking for an experienced Lead Researcher who can help us create the future of sport. By driving foundational and applied research projects, the Lead Researcher will deliver validated performance insights that result in technologically innovative apparel and/or equipment!

What you will work on

As a Lead Researcher in the NSRL, you will work closely with all members of the team to fuel and support the innovation research agenda, resulting in functionally enhanced innovative products. Primary activities include:

  • Understanding and influencing the apparel vision by focusing on the thermoregulatory interactions among an exercising athlete, their clothing, and the environment
  • Translating scientific expertise in thermoregulation response into knowledge and insights that drive apparel innovation
  • Working with cross-disciplinary business partners to ensure that research guides product innovation
  • Leading a research program to create new innovation opportunities by delivering novel athlete insights that guide innovation partners toward product solutions
  • Leveraging external partnerships to conduct research studies and expand internal capabilities and capacity
  • Managing the design and leadership of multiple research projects in a fast-paced and demanding environment
  • Collaboratively collecting, processing, and interpreting data using physiological hardware and software
  • Communicating knowledge, research findings, and insights to fellow scientists and to non-scientific business partners
  • Developing scientific capability and business acumen for themselves and junior colleagues

You will also develop new tools, methods, and procedures to open new research possibilities. Finally, you will demonstrate Nike's dedication to product performance research through attendance at scientific meetings and conferences.

Who you will work with

You will report to the Director of Apparel Research in the NSRL and work closely with a Principal Researcher on the Applied Apparel Research Team. You will serve as a full-time contributor to the product creation process, interacting with Researchers and Product Innovators in all phases of research to provide a holistic support of innovation concepts.

What you bring

Requirements for the position include:

  • A Ph.D. in Human Physiology, Exercise Physiology, or a related field (e.g., Kinesiology, Human Factors, Ergonomics, etc) or a Master’s in Human Physiology, Exercise Physiology, or a related field (e.g., Kinesiology, Human Factors, Ergonomics, etc.) plus 2-4 years of relevant post-educational professional experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training
  • Advanced understanding of physiology, thermoregulation, experimental design, sport performance, and injury mechanisms
  • Mastery of foundational concepts in the scientific process and associated thermoregulatory scientific tools
  • Expertise in processing, data analysis, and statistical analysis of physiological data
  • Significant experience using lab- and field-based human physiology data collection tools
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with multiple partners simultaneously
  • Experience setting an innovative research direction that is aligned with broader strategic goals and delivers impactful insights and outcomes
  • Experience being a creative scientist (e.g., novel protocols or processing techniques)
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior teammates with a team-first mindset
  • Good communication, people, and collaboration skills
  • Bias toward action and resilience in the face of adversity
  • Ability to translate research insights into product direction in an innovation setting preferred
  • Ability to work with cross-disciplinary partners to guide business or policy decisions with research preferred
  • Knowledge of apparel and/or equipment product creation process is a plus
  • Strong programming skills (Python and/or MATLAB) are a plus
