Responsibilities

- Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
- Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
- Exhibits problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
- Participates in the training/mentoring of new employees, students or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
- Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
- Promotes consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.
- Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
- Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
- Performs laboratory testing that pertains to patient care and diagnosis.
- Assists with hiring and training new staff members
- Ensures department documentation is complaint with hospital and regulatory guidelines.
- Ensures the department is in working order as assigned.
- Performs routine and special laboratory procedures, quality control, preventative maintenance, minor equipment repairs, inventory control, and statistical compilation.
- Leads and participates in quality assurance, performance improvement, laboratory education, new employee training, proficiency testing and staff scheduling when assigned.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- Baccalaureate Degree OR Associates Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science.
- Current knowledge of clinical laboratory techniques and principles
- ASCP or equivalent
- Certification within a specific area, i.e. M(ASCP), H(ASCP), C(ASCP) qualifies.
- Certification must be maintained without lapse during employment.
- If certification does lapse, job will be downgraded to Medical Laboratory Scientist (non-certified) until certification is reinstated.:
- Three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Lab Tech within a clinical laboratory.
Preferred Job Requirements:
- Five (5) years clinical laboratory experience
